Oscars: China Submits ‘Hidden Man’ As Foreign-language Entry
According to info published on the official website of the Academy Awards, Jiang Wen‘s Hidden Man has been submitted by China for the foreign-language film category. This marks Jiang’s first Oscar entry. Described as the third installment of Jiang Wen’s gangster trilogy, the film follows a young swordsman who returns home to try and solve a five-year-old murder case. Hidden Man was released in Chinese theaters on July 13 and made 583 million yuan ($84.2 million). Cannes Winner ‘Happy as Lazzaro’ Beats National-day Films in China?
This year’s week-long National-day holiday season was rather disappointing, as the quality of the theatrical releases was relatively weak and the total box office of the week decreased by 28.3% year-over-year. As Chinese moviegoers’ tastes become increasingly sophisticated, the needs for better quality films also become stronger. Happy as Lazzaro, an Italian film that won Best Screenplay at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, gained unexpected popularity in China during the National-day holiday week. Although the film hasn’t been released in China, pirated versions of the film became available on the internet since late September and over 8,000 people have marked on Chinese review site Douban that they had seen the film. The average score of the film on the site is 8.6/10 as of this writing. Currently, it’s unclear if the film will eventually be released theatrically in China.
