Things got chippy in Tuesday night’s game between the Mets and the Phillies. After Philadelphia starter David Buchanan hit both Wilmer Flores and Michael Cuddyer with pitches in the second inning, Matt Harvey threw a fastball square in the back of Phillies second baseman Chase Utley with two outs and first base open in the fifth.

Utley played it cool as home-plate umpire Alfonso Marquez warned both benches. Harvey appeared to stare down Utley, who had homered and singled off him earlier in the game:

Like practically every pitcher in Major League history, Harvey later told reporters that the pitch simply “got away.” He also hit infielder Freddy Galvis on a play Mets manager Terry Collins tried to challenge before umpires determined Collins took too long to initiate a review. Collins was ejected for arguing a catcher’s interference call later in the fifth, but the Mets went on to win, 6-5.

Harvey called the contest, which also saw the Mets lose captain David Wright to a hamstring injury, “the weirdest game I’ve ever been a part of.” The clubs meet again Wednesday as the Mets look to sweep the three-game series.
