The Portuguese government became the latest European country to agree extra austerity measures to try and start getting its debt under control.
Details of the measures emerged after a cabinet meeting earlier today. Portugal is anxious to avoid a Greek-style run on its finances.
The news came as trade unionists in neighbouring Spain called a public strike to protest at wage cuts.
