Jackson's brothers Jermaine (left), Randy, Tito and Marlon are attending a screening in Los Angeles. Their mother, Katherine, declines the invitation, saying it would be too "painful".
Hollywood stars Jennifer Lopez and Will Smith were also among the first to see the movie.
Other celebrities at the Los Angeles premiere included (l-r) Motown boss Berry Gordy, High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale, musicians Adam Lambert and Katy Perry and film director Kenny Ortega.
Impersonators in Beijing restaged Jackson's groundbreaking Smooth Criminal video. This Is It managed to snap up one of the last of 20 annual slots for foreign movies in China.
In London, the red carpet was graced by music stars (clockwise from left) Peter Andre, Westlife and JLS.
German fans left messages on a tribute wall outside a cinema in Berlin. Hundreds of people queued for the first screening, which took place in the middle of the night to coincide with the Los Angeles premiere.
In Los Angeles, London and New York, fans donned a single sequinned glove in tribute to the star. Ushers at one cinema were also kitted out with Jackson costumes (bottom right).
