There is a lot happening at Hudson Yards, the 28-acre west side megaproject by Related Companies. The platform is well underway, three towers are rising, and as of today, the 1 million-square-foot retail and restaurant pavilion, designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects, is going vertical. Called the Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards, the center will hold more than 100 businesses and be topped by a three-story Neiman Marcus, which marketing materials call "New York's first penthouse shopping experience." Acclaimed chef and restauranteur Thomas Keller will curate the eateries, and it's expected to open by 2018. Construction on the first tower, 10 Hudson Yards by Kohn Pedersen Fox, is supposed to wrap up later this year; as of April, it was at 32 of its 52 stories. The second tower, no. 30, also by KPF, is rising as well, but it won't open until after the retail center. At 1,287 feet, it will be the tallest tower in the development, and it will feature the city's highest observation deck. The seven-story retail complex will connect the base of these two towers.
The third under-construction tower is 55 Hudson Yards, which recently signed its first tenant. No vertical construction has started at the site, but excavation began in March and it should be complete in 2018. The first phase of Hudson Yards also include two residential towers, no. 15, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and David Rockwell, and no. 35, designed by David Childs/SOM. Neither has started construction, but permits were filed for the latter earlier this year. In addition to condos, no. 35 will also hold a luxury hotel and Equinox gym, while no. 15 will be rentals and condos.
