First Look Studios is going out of business by way of an assignment for the benefit of creditors. Millennium Entertainment, LLC has acquired substantially all of the assets of First Look Studios Inc. from the studio's senior secured creditors, and has also successfully employed many of the former key management and staff of First Look Studios.
At the moment, Millennium Entertainment has not disclosed its future plans regarding content from First Look.
First Look Studios started releasing Blu-ray titles in January 2008. Since then it has published nearly 40 unique titles, including major theatrical movies such as Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. Its latest released title was Once Fallen, which streeted on November 2. Its two upcoming titles (Dead Awake and Elephant White), haven't been cancelled or delayed at the time of writing.
An opportunity to remind anyone who hasn't seen it what an amazing movie Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is. One of the best Nicolas Cage performances I've seen in a long time. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
The Proposition is another great title from them.
The "new" company will probably keep everything in print with new artwork eventually I would think.
there's only 3 titles I see that I would want anyway.
The Proposition (one of my very favorites of its year and quite memorable to this day) is easily my favorite film from First Look, which provided a wonderful BD of that title, with a nice and informative assortment of extras, at a rather low price tag at the time of the disc's release. It made me wonder why other studios (both large and small) couldn't provide more value on their titles, given their higher price tags. I've seen other BD titles with lesser a.v. quality and fewer or lesser-quality supplements that were priced far higher than The Proposition from First Look.
Anyway, and perhaps more importantly, it's too bad that another independent studio is biting the dust. It means fewer distribution options for filmmakers and new films and a little less diversity at theaters and on filmed home entertainment. Alas, such is the state of the film industry today. The 90s are long gone.
First Look is actually a company I haven't had a lot of "like" for, however they have produced some interesting/new ideas/films that many other studios would not. The only titles of theirs I own or would buy are The Proposition, Leaves of Grass, Paris Je T'Aime & Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. Others worth at least seeing are King of California & War Inc.
