Last week, Alessia Cara was honored with Billboard‘s Rule Breaker award at the annual Women in Music event in New York City. On Thursday (Dec. 15), Cara is demonstrating how she pushes boundaries and defies norms with her new music video for “Seventeen.” The song serves as the opening track from her debut album, Know-It-All, which arrived last November.
The video takes place solely on a bus, though it sees Cara through the years from a young girl to an elderly woman. The most moving moment, though, comes at the halfway point when Cara is shown glammed up and holding a Grammy — though she has yet to be nominated for the award. When a Twitter user asked Cara what it meant, she said it symbolizes career longevity.
it symbolizes my hopes for long-term success in my career. putting it out into the universe, in other words. https://t.co/jytsY8LQ0r

Cara offered further insight into the video’s meaning with the message she shared in the description for the video: “It’s a personal song and video for me (starring my family and friends, as usual) and I’m excited it’s finally out for u guys to see. Hope it’ll remind u to enjoy all the little moments in life, especially this time of year. Thank u for making mine that much more special. Happy holidays & enjoy the video.”
