Prime Now drivers said the new facility at the Starbucks headquarters building opened to replace a fulfillment center on Amazon's downtown campus and make room for the company's third high-rise there.

Amazon on Tuesday opened a Prime Now fulfillment center on the first level of the Starbucks headquarters building in Seattle's Sodo neighborhood.

Prime Now drivers told the Puget Sound Business Journal that the new facility at First Avenue South and Utah Avenue South opened to replace a fulfillment center at Amazon's downtown Seattle campus and make room for the company to build its third high-rise there.

PSBJ recently took a rare look at Amazon's expanding downtown Seattle campus.

A Prime Now manager at the Starbucks headquarters location said the new site is “way bigger” than the fulfillment center on Amazon's downtown Seattle campus.

"We did move to a new building in Sodo," an Amazon spokesperson said. "We’re excited to continue super-fast delivery to Prime members in the area."

Starbucks could not be reached for more information.

Amazon’s (Nasdaq: AMZN) subscription-based Prime service has more members than ever. Consumer Intelligence Research Partners in January estimated that one in five U.S. adults, or 54 million people, have Amazon Prime memberships.

Still, there's a growing appetite among customers to get items immediately.

Amazon is even working on a drive-up grocery store in Ballard to capture some of those customers. Prime Now, meanwhile, allows customers to choose from an inventory of thousands of products and receive the items within one or two hours.

An expansion of the company’s Prime Now operations will allow Amazon to get more items to customer faster.
