YouTube to remain blocked 'indefinitely' in Pakistan: officials
ISLAMABAD: YouTube will remain blocked 'indefinitely' in Pakistan, a government official said Saturday as experts failed to find a way to filter content deemed offensive and blasphemous.
The video-sharing website has been blocked in the country since September 2012 over its hosting of the “Innocence of Muslims”, a movie that sparked furious protests around the world.
The Supreme Court ruled at the time that the site should be banned until a way was found to block all blasphemous content.
“[The] matter was reviewed several times but the situation effectively remains the same,” the minister for information technology and telecommunication Anusha Rehman told the Senate Friday.
“The government does not want to take any chance and wants to make sure that after the unblocking YouTube, no offensive content remains viewable in Pakistan,” a senior government official said.
“So far no tool or solution has been found which can totally block offensive content, that is why YouTube remains blocked and it will remain so indefinitely,” the official said.
Free speech campaigners have long complained of creeping censorship in the name of protecting religion or preventing obscenity, and have described the ban on YouTube as a violation of civil rights.
In November 2011, the telecommunications authority tried to ban nearly 1,700 “obscene” words from text messages, which included innocuous terms such as “lotion”, “athlete's foot” and “idiot”.
In 2010 Pakistan shut down Facebook for nearly two weeks over its hosting of allegedly blasphemous pages. It continues to restrict thousands of online links.

I don't understand why they are blocking youtube. I know there can be some offensive content on it but who is asking to view it. There are equal number of Muslims in India as in Pakistan but there it is not banned and people also don't have any problem related to any content. If they do have problem then that particular content link can be blocked not whole Youtube.
As someone said "If it is not my cup of tea then I should not drink it", similarly if something is offensive then don't watch it. Does banning Youtube mean that content is not there on it which people thought was offensive?

A very silly decision. Anyone who wants to can access Youtube by using proxies. The government has also to understand that there will always be one percent of people who will put offensive items on any media, and no one can do anything about it. Did murdering the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists stop the magazine? On the contrary, its circulation is now more than 20 times it was before the murders. If we find anything offensive on Youtube (or wherever) the answer is to move to another channel.

Sad. Youtube is the single most useful content website on the Internet. I watch technical conferences, courses, tutorials, news, recipes and just about everything from it.
The logic behind "not want to take any chance is flawed". It is routinely argued that because 99.99% of muslims are peaceful, it is unfair to label the community as a whole. Why isn't the same logic being used on Youtube? The percent of provocative videos is quite small. You don't block the entire website because of a tiny portion of videos. It is not as if anyone is being forced to watch them. The same logic applies to the entire Internet.

There are open abuses against Hindu deities by Akbaruddin Owaisi still running on Youtube in India. But no ban on Youtube . Neither the offending video was removed nor there was protest by Hindus. The act was condemned by more Muslims than Hindus. If you respect others then you get the same without demanding.

There is one unintended consequence of this ban. If you type Pakistan into Youtube, all you see is bad news. Pakistanis no longer have any control of the narrative because they are banned from participating in it.

This is not the only cause of banning Youtube website in Pakistan. There are several other reasons which makes the ban of the most popular video sharing website favourable for these so called authorities. If they could find a way of making all the blasphemous contents unviewable in Pakistan also in that condition they would not lift the ban from Youtube and the probable cause of this action is the availability of thousands of free online tutorial and other educational videos. Many famous educational institutions are bribing the responsible authorities for keeping Youtube blocked in Pakistan.

My friend who works in the same ministry told me that Two Video portals other than youtube have a strong lobby within the Minsitry. They are paying bribes to the officials and are making sure that Youtube will remain banned and all search will be directed towards their sites. One site is Pakistan based while the other site is European. Kindly investigate those claims as well.

Pakistan govt is denying all educational and learning aspects of Youtube to Pakistani students. Most lectures from big Universities are on Youtube.EDX.org has all it's lectures posted on Youtube. Khan Academy lectures are on Youtube. Pakistan govt is no different from Talibans since both work against educating people.

People often cite the golden period of Islam, but fail to understand that the golden period of Islam did not occur in vacuum. We are in year 2015!....people should be allowed to decide what to watch over the internet....if you dislike something, on youtube , just dont look at it.It may disturb you, but not others...

In the west....when we have a problem we get together and write and call our elected officials. They have the power to change things. And if they don't listen to people the people vote them out next time.
Majority in Pakistan agrees that YouTube should Not be banned. Why doewnt anyone start a partition and get 1 Million Signatures and send it to PMs office? I bet they would have to look at it.

This week I have used YouTube here (USA) to investigate some interests in history, music, philosophy, world news, and family heritage. I used it also to see some software applications, some travel videos, and to stay abreast of recent developments in two favorite hobbies.
From viewing, I came away with an enhanced respect for what humans have done, are doing and can do, and with hopes for the world we are giving to our future generations.
I did not look at anything vulgar -- not because somebody decided to prevent me from looking, but because I have learned that in life there are more enduring and important things to do.

you tube,facebook and other web site ban is perfect if you are working for best after life. Most people want to show just how pious they are, but otherwise are normal people. They do not really believe in after life and want to see everything.Rulers and clergy want to control people. I am 100 percent sure internet will bring down the influence of clergy and then one day youtube ban will be lifted.

WOW, Pakistani "experts" say content cannot be filtered!!!
Too bad that the Pakistani government technical "experts" must be totally unaware that EVERY OTHER MUSLIM COUNTRY has arranged for YouTube to install Localized Hubs in their respective countries so that content could be filtered/censored!!!
In fact more than 50 countries world wide have installed Localized Hubs OVER THE LAST DECADE!!!

Unfortunately in Pakistan governance does not exist and hence there is no one in power who is educated or has forsight so adopted the easiest option to ban it. Pakistan is not the only Muslim country trying to redress a balance between censorship and access, it does not have to look further than UAE where offensive websites are banned but a total ban is preposterous.

I got into data science and got my first job in IT by simply learning from an ocean of tutorials on YouTube. Banning YouTube is a loss for our students, teachers, scholars or anyone who is interested in learning from how to hit a nail with a hammer to advanced fields in science and technology.
we all now that people who have authority to ban such a beneficial platform have hit the peaks of knowledge, but please, we still have a lot to learn and I think banning YouTube is not a right thing to do.

by watching you tube we observe that many are happy with indian society,progress made by us and every now and then they compare with what pak. achieve since independence, they openly not happy with the rulers of govt.so many highly intelligent persons have confessed that govt. have done so many illegal activity with bangladesh and india and in afghanistan too. as a result we have been remain backward in all sector, and also labbele of terrirism sponsored country.giving sheltered to internationaly criminals govt.. suffered more till date nd no body trust us.people are getting more details of 1965, 1971 and kargil war to mumbai attck also indian parliament attack, where govt. agencies involvement.
