Here are the nominees for The Game Awards 2014

Samit Sarkar (he/him) is Polygon’s deputy managing editor. He has more than 16 years of experience covering video games, movies, television, and technology.

The Game Awards 2014 creator Geoff Keighley announced the nominees for the awards yesterday, and there's an eclectic mix of titles up for the top honor: Bayonetta 2, Dark Souls 2, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor.

No game was nominated more than three times, with four titles tied for that number of nods: Dark Souls 2, Hearthstone, Shadow of Mordor and South Park: The Stick of Truth. Nintendo was the most-nominated publisher, with 12 selections. Staff members from a group of 28 publications, including Polygon, voted on the games of 2014 to put together the list. Games had to have a release date of Nov. 25 or earlier in order to be eligible.

While Keighley is producing The Game Awards himself, without the involvement of Spike TV, the new show will retain some of the qualities of the network's Video Game Awards (rebranded to VGX last year). That includes the presence of a "Most Anticipated Game" honor and trailers announcing new games. The Game Awards also feature some unique categories that look to highlight more of what's going on in video game culture these days, such as "Trending Gamer," "eSports Team of the Year" and "Best Fan Creation."

Check out the full list below and a teaser video for the show above. The Game Awards will be livestreamed on the web starting at 9 p.m. ET on Dec. 5.
