Tyler Perry’s “Don’t Make a Black Woman Take Off Her Earrings: Madea’s Uninhibited Commentaries on Love and Life” was named book of the year at the second annual Quill Awards, an NBC-backed event that seeks to popularize books by letting the public register its favorites through online voting.

Other winners announced in New York on Tuesday night included Christopher Moore’s “A Dirty Job” for general fiction, Nora Roberts’ “Blue Smoke” for romance, Janet Evanovich’s “Twelve Sharp” for mystery/suspense/thriller, and Diana Gabaldon’s “A Breath of Snow and Ashes” for science fiction/fantasy/horror. The ceremony will be shown on some NBC stations Oct. 28.
