History

Origins

MeliBio was founded in 2020 by Darko Mandich and Aaron Schaller in Berkeley, California.[7][8][9] The company uses plant science and precision fermentation to produce honey without the need for bees.[10][11][12]

In November 2021, MeliBio was recognized by Time as one of "The Best Inventions of 2021".[13] In December 2022, MeliBio was mentioned by the New York Times in the article "How Will We Eat in 2023? Here Are 10 Predictions.".[14]

Funding

In March 2022, MeliBio raised $5.7 million in seed funding. The round was led by Astanor Ventures.[15] In November 2022, MeliBio raised $2.2 million in an extension round. The round was led by Collaborative Fund.[16]

Product

MeliBio currently produces bee-free honey using plant-based ingredients as a direct substitute to traditional honey.[17] In May 2022, MeliBio was showcased at Eleven Madison Park in a collaboration for World Bee Day.[18] In December 2022, MeliBio announced a partnership with Narayan Foods to launch an organic honey product in 75,000 European stores.[19]
