Tsitsi Dangarembga

Thanks for improving the lead on Tsitsi Dangarembga. I was not aware of that information.

I have a question. At the beginning of the month, I was creating articles on African filmmakers and noting them on both Africa and Film editathon pages. I then considered that counts of women on these editathon pages would be summarized at the end of the month. I could be causing double-counting of articles, so I started adding bios to only one page. I see that you added TD to the film page.

My question: Is it ok to put an article on more than one editathon page if that person can assigned to more than one category? thnx MauraWen (talk) 12:43, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

Sure Maura, those pages are not used in our most accurate stats - except for sharing our achievements. It helps others to swing in and help as I hope I did here. The main figures come from Wikidata which counts up all the biogs and counts all the gender=female or gender=not male (not sure which - obvs latter is better). She seems to have a lot going for her being first in some things and best in others. I was thinking that I should read the book. I updated the article on "the" book which is where I think I found the extra facts. Your work got 1,000s of tweets. Great work. Victuallers (talk) 14:19, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

@Victuallers and Antiqueight: I just started to read Tsitsi's book this weekend! That is what I love about writing articles on Wikipedia, it takes me to new subjects, people and places that I want to learn more about.

Ah Duh!! Of course - yes. It would be. I was trying to think where on the article it was but it is on the talk page. Grand so - I think I have mine all done. Though now I'm wondering - I wrote a page for a non-binary person - does theirs get picked up because the page doesn't say gender= male or is there a term that should be on the talk page to identify this? ☕ Antiqueight ^chatter 11:32, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

Ummm no, I think. The important record of her gender is held here. This is a pretty subtle recording that aims to deal with non-binary, but its very complete. This record MAY come from the en:wiki or it may come from a wiki in another language or from an individual editor or data being loaded from a good source like the ODNB. One of the great starts for Women in Red was having this data and tools were built to improve its recording. There are only about 10,000 people who have no gender recorded (which is pretty small for 1.5m biogs). HTH Victuallers (talk) 12:18, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

I am unclear as to what is the problem, as I thought a world champion was notable enough, and I don't understand the comment about the references I had. Hi @אמא של גולן: Sorry I saw your note, went to look and then got distracted. The arm wrestling is reffed but doesnt seem to be well covered and the association that she is chair of does not seem to have an address, employees etc. This makes the notability tricky but not insurmountable. Sadly the page on the arm wresting contest doesnt namecheck the women. Might be good to sort that out. I certainly think that world champions are notable assuming that the championship was representative - and not like the us baseball "world series" or a small village that has the "world" spider eating contest. You know I am terrible with photos. I think this one [1] is usable on the article I wrote for the Southern Plains Indian Museum, but I want to make sure. It has the logo on it for the Indian Arts and Crafts Board which is an agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior and it is on a government website. Does that make it usable for commons? Getting quality snapshots

Thanks for adding quality Nigerian images to Commons/Wikipedia. I understand the copyright guidelines concerning videos that are eligible for snaps, but what I want to know is the software you use for taking your snaps that ensures high quality images. Regards. Hi Handsome Boy. Thanks for noticing! No complex software used. I just full screen the video and then "prt sc" print screen. You need to load these up with the templates YouTube and License Review and make sure the screen grab shows the time in the video. I then crop it after it has been over checked for its license. Hi Roger. I seem to remember you are something of an expert on images for BLPs. I'm working on a biography for the Danish opera singer Lone Koppel. I have found this image on Flickr. Helen Slote Levitt

Hi Robert, while helping a student with his Hebrew article about Helen Levitt (a different person which was sometimes confused with Helen Slote Levitt) , I noticed that Helen Slote Levitt is actually a redirect for Alfred Lewis Levitt since the couples worked together. I find it a bit odd, but am not sure if it is just a case of a "joint" article which should be renamed or an article about Alfred, in which the information about Helen should be copied for a new created article. Thanks to the regular updates generated by WHGI and posted by Ipigott, we can see that en-wp's women's biographies are now at 17.8%. My question to the math wizard (you): approximately how many more biogs will it take to get to 18%? Thanks in advance, and Happy New Year, amigo. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:27, 8 January 2019 (UTC)

Rosiestep: Not sure if you're interested in 18% or 19%. If we continue at the same rate, we will need about 46,000 new bios to reach 19%. That will be around March 2020. If you are really more interested in 18%, it will take about 8,500 more articles. I'm not too sure how long that will take -- anything from three to nine months, depending on how many of our existing articles are deleted and how many men's biographies are coded male on Wikidata (there's quite a backlog). I've simply based these estimates on our stats over the past couple of years. We had a difficult time in 2018 as many women's bios were deleted from Wikidata.--Ipigott (talk) 16:55, 8 January 2019 (UTC)

Interesting estimates Ian. I guess the Wikidata deletion explains my disappointment. I had seen 15% in 2015, 16% in 2016, 17% in 2017 and I was hopeful that we would achieve 18% last year. The deletionists seem to have now included Wikidata - which is a pity. Can you explain more? Or provide a link as I thought that only en:Wikipedia would concern us, whereas a wikidata deletion may affect all languages. Oh and Happy New Year. (We had quite a few new years resolutions on Twitter to target this - but several productive editors do not tag WIR although we get mentioned in tweets). Need help in a time crunch.

Trying to get the Inter-Allied Women's Conference on the front page for its centennial. The photo of the organizer,[2] is awful, but in PD. Looks like what appeared in the newspaper was cropped from this[3] as hair, necklace, dress, pose, etc. is the same. I have no idea how to re-upload a better photo. Can you help? There are no doubt various dates which could be celebrated. Maybe we should have a WiR timeline. The original idea was born on 12 February 2015. The rest, as they say, is history. I like the modest "My aspiration is that it might make a difference, and my dream is that something may come of it that helps us to make Wikipedia more accessible and useful." It's a fact that this has been a life-changing journey for me, Roger. Maybe for you and others, too. I think about all the people we'll never meet who are now reading the articles and looking at the photos of all the notable women who now have a presence on Wikipedia because of the planning we did between Feb 12 - July 18, 2015; and all the coordination done by a devoted community since then. I imagine there is some girl out there -someone we will never meet- who is reading some biography of some notable woman/women, and thinking, "This is what I want to do; this is what I want to be". So yes, life-changing. BTW, I see that Adrianne uploaded a couple of photos of herself. That's a good start. @Rosiestep: Yep, we have a great pic of Anrianna that I encouraged her to take with butterflies. I have been adding to her biog and the research is really interesting. That "girl" in my mind is my grand daughter - if she can see successful people then she will know. There is nothing wrong with working (say) in a pet shop for your life - but it shouldn't be because you never thought you could be a Naturalist Prof or presenter, animal film director or head of a zoo. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Hmm tricky as "Nicholson family" are credited and would hold the copyright for 70 years after her death. If the pix were taken by a soldier photographer then they would be free to use after 50 years.... but no proof of this. One picture appears to be anonymous SO! 70 years since taken for anon. Hi Victuallers. I noticed that you recently used famousbirthdays.com as a source for biographical information in Ini Dima-Okojie. Please note that there is general consensus that famousbirthdays.com does not meet the reliable sourcing criteria for the inclusion of personal information in such articles. Generally I'd agree Ronz but for the date of the birth of a celebrity then they were born generally when they say they were born until we have better info. If she says its that date and gives it to this site then I would say best available source. Lots of the stuff about celebs (in partic) is obviously created by "their people". I don't keep up on the information at WP:RSP, but there's an entry for famousbirthdays: There is consensus that Famous Birthdays is generally unreliable.
