Venus Isabelle Palermo[3] (born 8 February 1997), better known as VenusAngelic,[3] is a Swiss-born[7] YouTube personality, known for her doll-like appearance and fashion sense.[8][9][10] Her YouTube channel has more than 140 million views, nearly 1,000,000 subscribers and 180 uploaded videos.[when?][11]

Early life and education

Palermo was born in Brugg, Switzerland.

In 2008 she and her mother Margaret moved to Tenerife, and whilst there, created her YouTube account in May 2010.[11] She began to upload videos of herself dancing to J-Pop, cosplay and Japan related creative videos.[12][13][14] These videos rapidly gained attention and she was invited to sing with Japanese singer Rumi Shishido in August 2010[15] and she also appeared on Japanese radio.[16] At that time she did not sign an entertainment contract in Japan but returned to Spain from where she continued uploading her videos to YouTube.

Seeing her daughter's potential, in 2011, her mother decided to move to Brixton, London with her[17] to pursue Palermo's career.[18] This decision turned out to be a good one, as one of her videos, the one entitled "How to look like a doll", went viral in March 2012.[19][20] As of April 2015, the video has amassed over 12,000,000 views.[21] Since then, she and her mother have been invited to and attended various international television shows, including Daybreak,[22] TLC Discovery[23] and The Morning Show Australia.[24]

Palermo moved to the Netherlands in early 2014 to pursue her education and was home-schooled by her mother.[25][26] As a consequence of her frequent relocation, she speaks English, Swiss German, German, Spanish, Dutch and Japanese.[27][17][28]

Palermo began her YouTube career by uploading videos of herself dancing to J-Pop, cosplay and Japan related creative videos[12][13][14] but when she started to create make up tutorials and went viral in March 2012 with her video "How to look like a doll" after being featured on Right This Minute,[19][20] she became known as the "living doll".[29] She created many hair and make-up tutorials showing others how to achieve her look, which has been likened to Japanese anime and video game characters.[30] Other make up tutorials of her also were featured at Right This Minute because of their high viral effect such as "How To Do Ariana Grande's Ponytail Hairstyle",[31] "How To Look ANDROID" [32] or "How To Look Like Annabelle".[33]

In 2013 her pre-release cover version of the Icona Pop song, "I Love It", took her to #71 on the UK Singles Chart.[34]
