‘BLOW’ GIFT REFLECTS POORLY ON HIT MOVIE

A little souvenir to promote a new movie is usually a good idea – but critics are saying the new movie “Blow” crossed the line with replica cocaine-cutter mirrors.

Many are snorting that the pocket-size mirrors, given out as mementos at advance screenings of the Johnny Depp flick, encourage drug use, because they are often used as cocaine-cutting boards, the Orange County Register reported.

The rectangular mirrors – contained in a rubber sleeve with the “Blow” logo on it – were distributed at screenings over the past few weeks, as well as at bars and outside sporting events to promote the movie.

Debbie Lips, director of the Hope Institute, a California-based drug rehab center, said the mirror giveaways are “sending out the wrong message” to teenagers. “If something is shown as glamorous, they might be inclined to use,” she said.

“Blow” opened in theaters nationwide Friday, earning $12.5 million and finishing third overall this weekend.

New Line Cinema, which is distributing the film, said it has given away as many as 1,000 mirrors. The mirrors have also popped up on the Internet auction site eBay, which was selling for $10.

The movie chronicles the real-life rise and fall of drug dealer George Jung, played by Johnny Depp.
