  • Immediate Science Ecology

    Immediate Science Ecology is an editorial-reviewed, open-access, electronic journal published at Queen’s University.  Opportunity for post-publication peer review and detailed download statistics are provided.  Undergraduate honor’s students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows publish free of charge.

    The primary goal of Immediate Science Ecology (ISE pronounced ‘eyes’) is to accelerate the rate of discovery in ecology.  This can be achieved through at least the three following pathways: discovery, documentation, and development.  All submissions are first identified as empirical or review.  Then, accordingly, the authors must identify both in the submission and in the keywords whether the article is forwarding ecology via discovery (preliminary or exploratory study), documentation (confirmatory study or refutation of previous studies), or development (a standard study).  The former two instances accelerate discovery in ecology by providing both the substrate for additional research developments and an accurate picture of the research conducted to date to the community so as to avoid repetition by others of work formerly unpublished and largely unknown.  The latter category enhances synthesis and research by providing a niche for studies that need to be published very quickly so as to inform the community or public about important findings. Any level of biological organization including humans is considered.

    ISE is searchable though Google Scholar, and by using any Open Archives Initiative (OAI) compliant metadata harvester.  Google Scholar also tracks number of citations and lists citations for articles published herein.

  • Ideas in Ecology and Evolution

    Ideas in Ecology and Evolution is a peer-reviewed, open-access, non-profit, electronic journal published at Queen's University.

    IEE publishes forum-style articles that develop New ideas or that involve original Commentaries on any topics within the broad domains of fundamental or applied ecology or evolution. They may encompass any level of biological organization, and involve any taxa, including humans. Articles may concern focussed subject matter within a particular sub-discipline of ecology or evolution, or they may be broader in scope, including articles that aim to inform fields of study outside of biology. The Table of Contents for the current issue is populated in succession, with each article added as soon as it is accepted for publication.

    Creativity and controversy are the catalysts of scientific enquiry and discovery. The central mission of this journal is to provide a rapidly published repository for novel thinking and opinion-pieces — to serve effectively as a 'catalogue' for modellers and empiricists, as well as for educators and the media, from which they can 'shop' for original ideas and hypotheses that have been subjected to critical peer review (including with published commentary response from professional biologists), and that are available then to be explored, debated and tested by researchers.  As a reliable source of inspiration, Ideas in Ecology and Evolution aims to play an important role in guiding the direction and progress of both future research and public awareness in ecology and evolution. IEE is searchable using Web of Science (starting 2015) and Google Scholar, and by using any Open Archives Initiative (OAI) compliant metadata harvester.

  • Proceedings of Science Open Reviewed

    Proceedings of Science Open Reviewed is a new peer-reviewed, open-access, electronic journal — run by researchers for researchers — providing rapid, low cost publication of discovery and commentary in the natural sciences, health sciences, and social sciences.  Proc SciOR is published at Queen’s University, Canada, where — for its advisory editorial board — it draws from the Queen’s community of over 400 researchers.

    Proc SciOR accepts submissions that are open peer-reviewed (non-blind) from authors registered with Science Open Reviewed — using an author-directed peer-review (ADPR) model.  Submissions therefore are already peer-reviewed and accompanied by reviewer reports — also registered with Science Open Reviewed.  Papers are published online as primary articles immediately following editor evaluation and approval of reviewer qualifications, reviewer reports, and routine screening for fraud check and author/reviewer conflicts of interest, plus any revision necessary to meet the journal’s formatting requirements and standards of quality for English and data (e.g. figure) presentation.

    REVIEWERS for primary articles are also registered with Science Open Reviewed, and for accepted papers their names and affiliations are listed conspicuously—under separate subtitle—directly below the author name(s) in the published article. Reviewers are also invited to submit a commentary (response paper / opinion piece) inspired by their review of the published Proc SciOR article, or by their review of an article (wherein they are acknowledged as a reviewer) published in any other journal.  These reviewer commentaries are reviewed by Advisory Editors of Proc SciOR, who may also consult with external reviewers.  No author fees are charged for publication of reviewer commentaries that respond to primary articles published in Proc SciOR.  Reviewers for Proc SciOR must hold a PhD or be registered as a PhD student at an accredited institution. Proc SciOR also supports post-publication peer-review, where logged-in users (identifited by name) can post comments on individual articles.

    TURN YOUR BLOG POSTING INTO A PEER-REVIEWED ARTICLE — In addition to original research reports and review papers, Proc SciOR also publishes your commentary/opinion pieces as cite-able peer-reviewed articles with doi numbers, together with published reviewer commentaries, plus post-publication peer-review through posted blog-style reader comments. If you already have a great blog posting, you can regard it as a 'pre-print', and turn it into a citable peer-reviewed article in Proc SciOR using the author-directed peer-review community at Science Open Reviewed.  Perhaps some of the good reader comments on your original blog post will also point to possibilities for coauthors on your submission to Proc SiOR.

    AUTHOR FEES (article processing charges) — currently only CAN $99 ($49 for grad students and postdocs) — are collected for cost recovery only, thus helping to maximize author funds available to support students, postdocs and front-line research costs (rather than the profit margins of commercial publishers).

    Proc SciOR is a participating member of LOCKSS ('Lots Of Copies Keep Stuff Safe'), which creates a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration. Proc SciOR is searchable through Google Scholar, and by using any Open Archives Initiative (OAI) compliant metadata harvester. Google Scholar also tracks number of citations and lists citations for articles published in Proc SciOR.

The scope of the journal includes knowledge and critical reflection on the following topics:

    • Alternative practices and conceptual frameworks of design disciplines that contribute to the empowerment of communities, especially in relation to how the practice of engineering, architecture and design is organized and managed: what do engineers, designers and architects do? For whom do they do it? With whom?;
    • The dominant practices and conceptual frameworks of design disciplines that work in interests opposed to the promotion of social justice and peace, including the relationship between engineering, design and architecture and dominant economic, governmental and cultural institutions;
    • The relationship between the design disciplines and the publics they serve, including needs assessments, linking professionals and practitioners with communities, public dialogue around the work of these disciplines, and the roles of their practitioners in the formulation of public policy;
