MUMBAI: Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) water supply project ‘Kapurbawdi to Bhandup Complex drinking water transmission tunnel’ of size 8,300 meters long, 128 meter deep, 6.3 meters dia has been drilled by Unity Infraprojects and IVRCL JV in20 months at an average speed of 410 meters a month with absolute zero deviation.
This tunnel has registered fastest boring speed of 60 meters in 24 hrs cycle and 870 meters in the month of October 2013.

In the small event of daylight break-through tunnel at Bhandup complex organised by MCGM Rajiv Jalota, AMC (Additional Municipal Commissioner) of MCGM WSP (Water Supply Project) appreciated the technical expertise of Unity Infra-IVRCL JV and applauded engineering record of fastest boring with zero deviation and zero fatality.
The water supply project (WSP) by MCGM targets to achieve the required water supply for Mumbai by 2021 with additional water supply of 3120 mld to be achieved.
Rajiv Jalota AMC (Additional Municipal Commissioner) of MCGM WSP(Water Supply Project) said, “It’s always a challenging task to achieve the target of boring an underground tunnel of such size with zero error and zero fatalities.
Despite of several hurdles like loose rock, cavities and geological conditions, the task was completed with a massive engineering record in India. This is truly an achievement for us and we look forward to more such accomplishments”.
