CHENNAI: School students in Tamil Nadu, who are availing travel concession in government buses, can continue to use last year's pass until the new ones are distributed.
State board schools are reopening on Monday. There was confusion among students as to whether the free bus passes, issued to them last year, would be valid or whether they should pay for their tickets until they received the new passes.
The state transport department has clarified this and advised all government bus conductors not to demand ticket fare from any of the students wearing school uniforms.
The flagship scheme was launched by former chief minister M Karunanidhi in 1996-97. Government school and college students are exempted from paying for tickets while 50% concession is given to private school and college students.
