Star Officially Dead, Creator Lee Daniels Confirms: ‘It Ain’t Happening’
Despite the best efforts of series creator Lee Daniels, Fox‘s Star — which was cancelled earlier this month after three seasons — will not be saved. Daniels made the announcement himself via an Instagram video on Thursday.
UPDATE: There will be a TV-movie to wrap things up, however!
“OK, so I’ve got some bad news: It ain’t happening,” Daniels says in the video. “I tried my best, guys. You know, we got some incredible people. I mean, I can’t even list everybody. I’ll say it in a letter. But in a nutshell, it ain’t happening. I did my best. Just know that, like with Precious or with Empire … The Butler, Monster’s Ball, the next thing I do is going to be Star. It will exist in all of my work. I love you, all of the fans that have supported us.”

Of the 25 shows cancelled earlier this month, TVLine readers voted Star and ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier as the shows they most wanted to see un-cancelled. Unfortunately, neither show will return this fall.
The cast of Star included Jude Demorest as Star Davis, Brittany O’Grady as Simone Davis Rivera, Ryan Destiny as Alex Crane Jones, Amiyah Scott as Cotton Brown, Quincy Brown as Derek Jones and Queen Latifah as Carlotta Renee Brown.

Got too bougie after season 1 which was excellent. Stopped watching after season 3 episode 2. Same thing happened with Empire. Season 1 was great then season 2 dipped and mid 3 was where I checked out.

This seriously cant happen…. Ive watched Star faithfully. I absolutley love everything about this show. That cliff-hanger at the end of season 3 got me shocked. I had so many feelings and i have so many questions unanswered… This show shows how true things are in the world and give inspiration to stand up and do what you believe in and do the right thing. Hopefully within time the show Star will return, and probably better than ever.

So you’re telling me every other platform turned this show down? Even after it had consistent ratings? Even after it won a poll of which show deserved to be saved? Even after it had multiple petitions with almost 100,000 signatures? Why were networks so quick to save Lucifer and B99 last year, but Star gets left for dead? I’m truly done with the fox network. Every single fox show I watch, they cancel. Star, The Gifted, The Mick, etc. Why get invested in anything they produce when I know it’s gonna be cancelled after two or three seasons on a cliffhanger. No thanks. This show and it’s fans were robbed.

If they knew they weren’t going to renew why end with a cliffhanger? Also I don’t get the idea behind cancelling a great show with such fan base,downloads and vote only to bring some boring dumb show that probably wouldn’t even make it through the first season. STAR is a legendary show and should have a proper ending for the casts and the fans. I love that crazy show #saveleedanielsSTAR.

I’m just seeing this and I’m pissed! I love Star I love the music, I follow everyone on IG it’s just not fair. & how do you end a show like that!? I’m a little confused though because some people are saying Netflix or Hulu pick the show up… the show IS on Hulu 🤷🏽♀️ But idk they need to continue this show I hate just when things are getting so good my dang shows stop.

I totally agree with you. Especially the way it ended….I didn’t really watch empire but sure did watch Star religiously though and the way Season 3 ended…now we’ll never know about the shooting and Alex’s son

I so agree with you…its not fair…star not only was a great show it dealt with real life issues…it made you want to watch it every Wednesday and then rewatch it the next day….as fans we were robbed…
I agree with you. I just don’t understand Fox. The only show I watched this season and LOVED but was SURE would be cancelled was All American. I was SO confident about The Gifted, The Passage and Star that I wasn’t even concerned. The only show that was renewed? The only show NOT on Fox. Smh.

Polls and petitions don’t matter… I’m not sure why people seem to think they do. Networks do not care that 15.5% of the people who voted on a poll on TVLine want Star back because let’s be honest, 15% is not a lot of people. And a petition with only 100,000 signatures is not a lot of signatures. That is less than 10% of the actual audience that watches the show. It baffles me that people consider petitions and polls as something tangible for networks to consider. Having said that, it does baffle me that they cancelled it. Only because the ratings actually were fairly consistent. They weren’t amazing, but nobodies ratings on TV are amazing anymore. Everything sucks, ratings wise. They weren’t that far off from Empire’s ratings and I can guarantee that Star is far less expensive to produce than Empire is. I’m sure Taraji and Terrence’s salaries are larger than the entire cast of Star’s combined. Lol So it does shock me that they cancelled it and they can’t find a new home for it, but I’m not surprised they don’t about petitions and polls.

Star was such a great show. It had real life problems in there and the fact that they cancelled it is heartbreaking. Everytime they dropped a new episode is was great. It’s sad to see real life problems that us humans struggle with on television series is tossed away once again.

Josh, I agree with you. It seems that every time you start watching a show it gets cancelled. It feels like they know from season 1 that it’s going to get cancelled somewhere down the line. It’s very disappointing.

My sentiments exactly. No longer worth getting involved. Never can figure the mind set of those who determine the line up of Network TV. Must say the streaming Co.s are loving it, I can see now that at least there is some consideration for what the viewers want. You would think that since Fox finally had some programming worth props they could maintain it’s momentum, still not able to Stomp with the big dogs? A measure of success and can’t maintain it. “Where’s my remote”**CLICK.. turn the channel….

I heard Empire was going to end as of this last season’s finale I did they been canceled also I will not continue to watch Fox since every show that I liked on there has been canceled get you all hyped up for nothing

Well that’s disappointing. I hope Lee will bring some characters from Star and incorporate them into Empire’s final season. Becky and Giselle are running their own label so it would be perfect if Take 3 signed with them.

That would be so coooooooool if Becky and Giselle could pick them up! OmGosh! That would be awesome! That’s the only reason I would watch Empire. This last season is so corny its just a waste, they need to focus on Becky and Giselle with their label. Remaking Andre and his mental capacities is just a waste of money!!
I liked the show. I liked the diversity in the cast. However, it really went downhill after Jahil’s death, and I am not surprised by the cancellation. This last season was pretty bad. Perhaps Carlotta can cross over to Empire again to give us some closure. Maybe Star can even become an Empire artist. I’ll miss Star, Carlotta, and Cotton most of all. But Alex and Simone had both become to whiny to care about, and Angel was not that interesting to begin with. I will NOT miss Simone crying over Angel’s death while she;s doing some chick to get over him. ;) And I liked seeing Cassie throw herself in front of a bullet to save Carlotta, but quite frankly, they killed off too many of the interesting characters in the finale.

Yes, I’d be happy with a brief Carlotta cross over where she can fill us in about the fallout from the Star finale. Let Empire have them in one of the stops on the Comeback Tour to give us closure.

Yes, I’d have watched another season of Star. But if it continues on the path it was on, maybe we should thank them for freeing up an hour of our week for better programming, Star probably had reached its peak, even if us fans do not want to admit it.

It was quite obvious that they were going in “Noah’s mom stole the baby from Star” direction, and the only ones that were probably dead for sure was Mateo, because he previously told Carlotta that if she landed the sponsor buyer for gravity then she was the new label owner

This is still painful. Star deserved much more than what it received. Great show, great cast, great acting, great writing.
I just didn’t find the characters like-able and they all seemed so miserable. I thought that when they sang they did great but it was pretty laughable in the acting and writing department. I haven’t seen season 3 yet so maybe it got better.

Seriously this is ridiculous. The one show I absolutely loved all around and it’s over before it even really gets to delve into the story. But Empire, a show where they literally took the story into outer space it’s so unbelievable, stays on air.
