Saturday Night Live has elected to make a major casting change: Jim Carrey will take over the role of Vice President Joe Biden in Season 46, succeeding Jason Sudeikis. The recasting comes with the presidential election — pitting Biden against incumbent POTUS Donald Trump — less than two months away.
“There was some interest on his part,” EP Lorne Michaels tells Vulture of Carrey. “And then we responded, obviously, positively. But it came down to discussions about what the take was. He and [head writer/cast member] Colin Jost had a bunch of talks. He and I as well.”
Michaels also confirmed that Alec Baldwin will be back as Trump, with Maya Rudolph set to once again play Biden’s running mate Kamala Harris.
Additionally, SNL has added three new featured players — improv vets Lauren Holt, Punkie Johnson and Andrew Dismukes — to the cast.
Season 46 will premiere on Saturday, Oct. 3, and it will do so from its signature Studio 8H stomping ground as well as with a “limited in-studio audience.” SNL will kick off its new season with five consecutive shows.
The premiere will mark SNL‘s first in-studio episode since March 7. Three non-live, at-home, COVID-safe installments closed out Season 45.
As we reported earlier this week, SNL‘s entire ensemble — including Kate McKinnon — will be back for Season 46.
I can see it. And he seems not quite as busy as Jason Sudeikis.
Jim Carrey is hilarious! I think he will do a good job.
He WAS hilarious… 25 years ago.
Allllrighty, then (couldn’t resist).
Didn’t see this coming, but I can picture it! I wonder if the limited audience will just be staff members at 30 Rock who have already been tested and vetted, or even just a laugh track.
Omg yes! I love Jim Carrey. Very interested to see this.
Love, love Jim Carrey, can’t wait to see SAturday Night lIve. Alex Baldwin is really
Y good too”
I love Jim Carrey, but am I the only one who thinks it’s kinda lame that they’ve been outsourcing the biggest parts to non-cast members over the last several years? Sometimes it makes sense (Maya Rudolph is a dead ringer for Kamala), but is there no one in the huge cast who can pull off a Joe Biden impression?
100%
I kind of agree. But on the flip side if I were Lorne Michaels, I would definitely want all the publicity this sort of stunt casting provides.
There are a few cast members who can do Biden, though not that well I’d bet. Plus, most of them are better suited to other folks who figure to be prominent in this election cycle.
Can’t wait to see him in the makeup.
No! Woody Harrelson was soooo good as Biden. Had really hoped he would be back!
This is everything that’s wrong with SNL. The whole point is to use THE CAST!!!
I 100% agree with you!
SNL has lost the point.
Chevy Chase did Gerald Ford with no makeup, no hairpiece. Dan Aykroyd did Jimmy Carter with a moustache.
But who in the current cast could.do it? They don’t have anyone old enough I don’t think
God reads internet comments. You should be ashamed.
My comment was in response to a comment that has now been removed. Thank you, Michael!
A much better and far superior choice for a political Character than Baldwin in doing Trump and far less mean spirited.
Jim Carrey should make a good Biden because they are both against the 2nd Amendment and the rights of the people. Next to probably go after the first Amendment and then the 15th Amendment. Because once they get started taking things away is hard to stop them.
So as it turns out, Presidents can’t change the constitution. Crazy, huh? And surprising, I bet, if you listen to the current president, who thinks he can do whatever he wants. But believe it or not, we still follow the rule of law here in the good ol’ US of A!
Get rid of Baldwin and get Brendan Gleeson (The Comey Rule) to do Trump this year.
Oh great, we’re going to get Jim Carey doing his same, lame 30 year old schtick and not somebody doing a comedic take on Biden like Woody and Jason did. It’s going to be Ace Ventura, presidential candidate.
The worn out Carry. Maybe he’ll bring one of his paint by number pictures with him.
