This year’s Super Bowl lead-out program, CBS‘ The Equalizer, has scored a touchdown in the form of an early Season 2 renewal.
TVLine’s Broadcast-TV Renewal Scorecard has thusly been updated.
“The Equalizer has proven more than equal to the task of engaging viewers and racking up wins on Sunday night,” CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl said in a statement. “We’re extremely proud to see this outstanding broadcast drama, led by Queen Latifah, punch through the competitive landscape and return for a second season.”
In this post-Super Bowl slot, The Equalizer on Feb. 7 debuted to north of 20 million total viewers — the largest audience for any entertainment program since the February 2020 Academy Awards — along with a 5.1 demo rating. In three outings since then, it has averaged 8 million viewers and higher than a 0.8 demo rating (in Live+Same Day numbers), always and easily delivering its Sunday time slot’s largest audience.
Among all dramas airing on CBS this season, The Equalizer (based on its regularly scheduled airings) ranks second in total audience (trailing only NCIS) and No. 3 in the demo.
A reimagining of the 1980s series starring Edward Woodward, The Equalizer stars Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, an enigmatic woman who uses her extensive skills as a former CIA operative to help those with nowhere else to turn. Rounding out the freshman drama’s ensemble are Chris Noth, Lorraine Toussaint, Tory Kittles, Adam Goldberg, Liza Lapira and Laya DeLeon Hayes.
Following Oprah- and Grammys-related preemptions and such, The Equalizer will resume its freshman run on Sunday, March 28 at 8/7c.
CBS previously gave early renewals to Monday sitcoms The Neighborhood and Bob Hearts Abishola.

YAYYYYYY
Excellent news. Loving the Equalizer.
Great news!!
Yay! Really liking the show :)
I’ve really been enjoying the show as well — terrific news! Does anyone know how many total episodes S1 will have? And more importantly, is there a chance that when we get to S2, if Covid conditions have improved, what’s the likelihood that Equalizer could be a show that gets closer to the full 20 eps per season instead of the 10-ish that seems to be getting more common with shows these days?
Yay! Happy!
I always liked Queen Latifah. I’m happy that the Equalizer will see a S2. It’s still has some ways to go (with the supporting cast) but, they’ll have a chance to find their groove.
I love Queen Latifah and I love the show. Thank you CBS for renewing. Now if CBS would do something about their scheduling on Sundays, that would be a plus too!
Well, NCIS NOLA is canceled. So, CBS can find something to replace it.
This one won’t do.
Bart’s lap dog Ruff.
Ncis L.A. isn’t cancelled…New Orleans is.
NOLA is New Orleans
Not surprised it got renewed with its solid ratings, but still pleased by the news! The cast has some nice chemistry. I’m really enjoying the series so far.
It’s not bad actually surprised me gonna miss Denzel version but the Queen is convincingly pretty good and I read she doesn’t her own stunts she’s in better shape than me CBShas another hit!
Actually she is far from convincing in this role. Much, much better in comedy.
I don’t buy it, that’s for sure.
Halle Berry would of been a better choice she was good in john wick
That’s why it works. If she were chiseled and thin with muscles and all that, she would look like The Equalizer but she doesn’t, she looks like a mom next door. It’s why she remains undercover so well.
I am so glad The Equalizer has been renewed. I watched the Edward Woodward series when it was on TV and I saw the Denzel Washington movies. All of which were very good. I think Queen Latifah does an amazing job as Robyn McCall. I have watched all the episodes so far and look forward to seeing more of the shows.
Thank you.
I didn’t realize Queen Latifah has been training in martial arts and marksmanship for years till I saw her interviewed on The Tonight Show. Her action scenes are very polished and believable, and that’s what really sells me on the show. Impressive work. Great news!
Good news, it’s had a pretty solid start IMO.
Great news. Terrific show with an excellent supporting cast, led by Queen Latifah. I love The Queen!!
YAY!!!! Really happy Queen is back on tv and have this show renewed for S2!😆😆👏 STILL bummed about STAR, please Lee Daniels when is the tv movie gonna happen so the fans can finally have closer!
good very good i love it
She is totally out of place and character in this one!
Agreed
She is much better in comedy.
A really good show doesn’t get cancelled? Hurray!
Horrible show. The star wants to be but definitely is NOT superhero material.
I have to agree with you.
An overweight menopausal women whose roundhouse kick isn’t shin high doesn’t fool anyone. Mediocre at best and yes, I made an attempt to watch it. This show checks off all the boxes for 2021 meeting the silly diversity requirements. IQ’s of low 70’s find it well acted.
Great really love this show. Can’t wait for more.
Wouldn’t watch this if you paid me..
[Rips up $5,000 check]
Matt – can you give yourself 5000 bonus points for this response?
Best news I’ve heard in a long time. Great show.
This makes me happy! Love this show.
lol show sucks and all of these comments are rigged. Queen Latifah cannot beat anyone up, this show was the joke of the nfl playoffs with all the commercials and you’re numb if you like this show with all the amazing content out there. Go watch Wandavision people, jfc.
Love this show , totally awesome Hope it has a really long run!!!!
Same sad case as in Star Trek Discovery.
Instead of good actors and scripts, TV now is more about social statements. In 20 years, critics will site the 2020’s as the worst decade for network tv.
