Former Grey’s Anatomy doc Sara Ramirez has sutured herself into an iconic friendship circle.
The actress is joining HBO Max‘s forthcoming Sex and the City sequel series, titled And Just Like That... as a series regular opposite franchise vets Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis. Ramirez will help fill the void left by original cast member Kim Cattrall, who will not be reprising her role as Samantha in the 10-episode quasi-revival.
And Just Like That... — which begins production in New York this summer — follows Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte as they “navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s.”
Ramirez’s character, Che Diaz, is a non-binary, queer, stand-up comedian that hosts a podcast on which Carrie is regularly featured. “Che is a big presence with a big heart whose outrageous sense of humor and progressive, human overview of gender roles has made them and their podcast very popular,” per HBO Max.
As we previously reported, Che is one of three diverse new series regular roles being incorporated into the show.
“Everyone at And Just Like That… is beyond thrilled that a dynamically talented actor such as Sara Ramírez has joined the Sex and the City family,” said showrunner/EP Michael Patrick King in a statement. “Sara is a one-of-a-kind talent, equally at home with comedy and drama — and we feel excited and inspired to create this new character for the show.”
Ramirez most recently appeared as policy advisor Kat Sandoval in CBS’ late Madam Secretary.
oh for god’s sake not another BLM homage
You should have been. “woke” years ago
What does BLM have to do with literally anything mentioned in the article?
You’ll have to excuse Peegee, they’re an idiot.
It’s any excuse to shovel more propaganda… ignore the troll.
What are talking about lol I can tell you are what my friends from South white trash lol sad I have share same skin color wi clueless buffoon
Love this news! Sounds like a nice way to bring Carrie into the modern era.
Also, Sara identifies as non-binary, so the first paragraph could use a slight pronoun correction.
Thank you, I came here to say the same thing!
Just a heads up, it looks like Sara uses she/they as pronouns. Non-binary can sometimes identify a couple different ways. But good catch!
Sara’s pronouns are SHE/they, so the first sentence is still applicable. Sara herself even said and tweeted that she is good with being referred to as either.
Didn’t know this, thanks!
Just an FYI, one does not “identify” as non-binary, a person simply IS non-binary! It may seem like an insignificant choice of language, but it’s really impactful :)
Nice! Tony Award winner. Was great on Grey’s Anatomy. Talented!
Why not cast a non-binary actor?
Sara identifies as non-binary…

No
Actually, one must ‘identify’ as non-binary – no one will guess (or dare to guess) otherwise. It’s the nature of being special in a sea of other. Also, it’s probably not smart to be confusing about an issue many already find confusing. Most people are pressed to understand why they should identify their preferred pronouns, let alone the underlying context.
That should be a problem for “most people” to deal with not the person who IS nonbinary. Majority rules is not a valid argument when it comes to an individual and their right to be respectfully “identified” as they are. You may identify them one way or another because you are an outside individual but they are who they are and do not identify themselves by living their truth. English is tricky but not that difficult if we are all respectful of one another.
All we wanted was Samantha Jones. “Revival” is a stretch at this point. I commend the show for wanting to make things more diverse and inclusive, but this is not Sex and the City. Call it a spin off.
It literally has a different title “And Just Like That…” so what are whining about?
It is SATC-I think SATC will be part of the title,it’s mostly the same characters & it’s a continuing after the series & films ,.It’s a sequel.A spin-off would be Steve & Miranda or Charlotte & Harry moving somewhere else.
This is awesome news! Sara Ramirez has both the dramatic chops and the comedic timing to do great on this show.
And I will not be mad if they come up with a reason for her to sing. I don’t even care if it’s a good reason. I’d even be happy if she just sings all her dialogue.
I’m DYING to hear Sara sing in something -ANYTHING – again. I’m praying there’s a musical fantasy number in this show!
Another attempt to remain relevant in 2021? The last film of SatC was awful and did not do justice to the legacy. We all know Samantha’s gone, Carrie’s portrayer is really selling her shoes in the city, and life moved on.
Well dang it, now I’m interested
As long as the writing is basically the same as the original series and doesn’t change too much because it’s 2021 the show will make fans happy. I think the current world is being too harsh on the lack of diversity the show had in the past, would people be asking for diversity if there was a new season of other old shows about a group of women that are all the same race like Girlfriends or Living Single??
I’m gonna watch but are they really calling it “And Just Like That”…okay.
I’m certainly glad I don’t subscribe to HBO Max. This is conforming to so many other new shows, pandering to as many “groups” as possible. I can hear the writers now. “Let’s go through that list one more time. We don’t want to appear to be lacking diversity. Hey, how about someone transgender? Oh, and we need an Asian.” Oh, for the days when all we needed was the wacky next door neighbor. Where are Fred and Ethel Mertz when you need them?
They’re dead, because that was ancient history. Guess what? There are more than just white straight people in the world.
Sara is an amazing actor, extremely talented and a credit to any company. Deal with it.
While I’m happy with this news because I miss Sara Ramirez on my screen, I must say, your articles are FILLED with ads before getting to the comment section. I have to scroll so much just to get to it. Please fix this if you can.
