Miramax nearly reached parity with perennial indie leader New Line Cinema this year, as Miramax added six new titles and New Line seven to Daily Variety’s annual “bantamweights” lineup.
Miramax’s “The Crying Game” was the runaway hit among independents. Its inclusion in the top-10 here is surrounded by genre films like New Line’s “Teenage Turtles” efforts.
That successful series of kiddie films is demonstrating the law of diminishing returns. There was a drop off of 38% from the first one to the second, both placing at the top of the all-time bantamweight chart. However, part III earned film rentals at a level less than half that of the second one, indicating that theatrical viability for such an expensive series is in doubt.
Other than the big two distribs, Goldwyn was the only indie to add as many as two new titles to the chart.

Off to an auspicious start is Gramercy Pictures, with its first release, “Posse,” immediately making the chart.
Following are the film rental champions from independent distribution companies, 1970-93, including all films reporting rentals of $ 1 million and over for the U.S. and Canada. Brand-new 1993 releases are included with their film rentals estimated by Daily Variety based on grosses earned through June 10, 1993. Only the U.S. distributor is listed, though many films have a different distributor for the Canadian market.
The equivalent of film rentals in the cases of the four-wall companies such as Pacific International and Sunn Classics/Taft has been determined by subtracting the flat theater rental fee from the total box office take. Excluded from this chart are the traditional major distributors as well as National General Pictures, Cinerama Releasing, Allied Artists, Joseph E. Levine’s Embassy Pictures, DEG and AFD, which operated as majors. As a result, major releases such as “The Muppet Movie” and “Carnal Knowledge” have been deleted from bantamweight consideration. Data on films from these distributors as well as older films can be found in Variety’s annual Rental Champs charts.
No figures are reported here for hardcore porn films; readers interested in further information should consult the Variety’s Rental Champs charts that include the most successful 1970s porn features such as “Deep Throat” and “The Devil in Miss Jones.”
