Sony has set an Aug. 18, 2017, release for its reboot of “Flatliners,” with Kiefer Sutherland signed on to return.

Sutherland signed on last week to star opposite Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemons.

The original 1990 movie starred Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Billy Baldwin and Oliver Platt as medical students exploring near death on the examination table until the consequences began to jeopardize their lives. Sutherland’s character convinced four of his medical school classmates to help him discover what lies beyond death.

Swedish director Niels Arden Oplev is directing the reboot from a script by Ben Ripley. Producers are Laurence Mark and Michael Douglas, who produced the original movie.

The film is expected to begin shooting in Toronto this week. It’s not clear what role Sutherland will play.

“Flatliners” is the first film to be set for the Aug. 18, 2017, slot.
