Canadians tweet up a storm during closing ceremonies By QMI Agency

The Canadian star power and stereotypes on display at the 2010 Winter Olympics Closing Ceremonies had Canadians trading quips online from coast to coast, while Americans mostly lamented not being able to see it in full.

The show featured appearances by a slew of Canadian celebrities, including William Shatner and Michael J. Fox; performances by pop icons like Avril Lavigne and Simple Plan; and a mish-mash Canadian iconography, including scantily clad Mountie dancers and a giant beaver and moose.

Social networking sites exploded with reaction on both sides of the border, with some people lambasting the use of stereotypes and others embracing the tongue-in-cheek display.

"Please stop. I love you Canada. Please stop now. Thanks," tweeted Laura Palmer.

"Can Harper grab the mic and prorogue these #closingceremonies somehow?" tweeted Saskatoon's Ishmael Daro.

"Olympic Closing Cerimonies. - giant beavers, floating moose, and hot chic Mounties in too short skirts, (with) Bluebay ... I heart Canada...!" tweeted Calgary's Paul Weaver.

Others expressed dismay over the musical selection, calling for more independent Canadian musical acts to follow legendary rocker Neil Yong.

"Is it too late to take medals away from Canada for this horrendous musical montage at closing ceremonies?" tweeted Hamilton's Saad Aslam.

"I bet they could have gotten Rush. Arcade Fire? Metric? I don't know who's on their radar. Paul Anka is still alive, why didn't you call him," tweeted Kate Beaton of Halifax.

Meanwhile, tweeters south of the border poked fun at the ceremonies, while bashing NBC for failing to broadcast them in full.

NBC broke up its coverage of the ceremonies to debut its new reality show, The Marriage Ref.

"NBC, interrupting the Olympic Closing Ceremonies for that show was incredibly crass & self-serving," tweeted Genny Carter.

"NBC wants to leave the closing ceremonies to show the Marriage Ref? #fail yet again," tweeted Reagan Lynch, from Midland, Tex.
