About

Formed in Summerlin, Las Vegas, childhood friends Ryan Ross and Spencer Smith began their musical interest at the age of thirteen, playing covers of Blink 182. They then recruited friend Brent Wilson and classmate Brandon Urie to complete their group. The band took their name from a line in the band Name Taken's song Panic.

The band contacted Fall Out Boy's bassist Pete Wentz through LiveJournal to get their music heard. Wentz was so impressed and went to Las Vegas to see the band himself. Wentz convinced them to sign with his Fueled By Ramen imprint label Decaydance. They got their first big break appearing on MTV's TRL in January 2006 premiering their carrier single I Write Sins Not Tragedies. The video features Lucent Dossier Vaudeville Cirque, and has an eerie circus wedding theme. The video debuted #10 on TRL and made it #13 in the Billboard Charts by July 2006.

Their second single But It's Better If You Do peaked on the UK Charts at #23 on its release. The video, according to vocalist Brandon Urie is meant to show the dark and secluded style of Panic to their fans. The video shows a band playing in a speakeasy 1930's America. They began their tour headlining in Europe in May 2006. All tour dates were sold out. Afterward, the band embarked on a two-month North American headlining tour with supporting acts The Hush Sound, OK Go, The Dresden Dolls, and Lucent Dossier Vaudeville Cirque.

They released their third single Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off in July 2006 and a follow up single for the official soundtrack of the movie Snakes On A Plane. That single, The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide Is Press Coverage, reached #5 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks, and is planned to be the next single for Pop stations. Their debut album, A Fever You Can't Sweat Out reached Platinum status in August selling over a million copies in the US alone.

With all the hype no one would suspect the band has its off cam troubles. Their former bassist, Brent Wilson left the band in May 17. With his departure, the band officially announced the departure on the band's website. No official reason was given for Wilson's departure. The announcement stated that a long-time friend of the band, Jon Walker, would be filling in for the summer tour as a temporary bassist while the band searched for a permanent replacement. On July 3, the band's Myspace profile was edited to list Walker as bassist/vocals, and Walker is now considered a member of P!ATD. But Wilson states that he was fired from the band as opposed to the band's official statement. Brent Wilson is now demanding a cut of royalties from the band's debut album based on his work, the band retaliated by stating that Wilson did not contribute playing the bass nor writing bass parts in the album.

At the recent 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, P!ATD won the Video Of The Year award for I Write Sins, Not Tragedies beating other artists like Christina Aguilera and Red Hot Chili Peppers. While heading on stage to accept their award from presenter Jennifer Lopez, a man named Sixx jumped on stage and took the microphone from Urie's hand and promoted himself for five seconds till security took him offstage. In true P!ATD spirit, bassist Jon Walker jokingly said, That was totally planned, and the band accepted their award with Urie commenting, He stole our thunder. Panic! also performed I Write Sins Not Tragedies. during the award show.

The band is set to embark on a world tour later in 2006, including dates in Australia, New Zealand, and mainland Europe, and later will embark on their first-ever stadium tour with Bloc Party and Jack's Mannequin. The band will appear with Fall Out Boy, Marilyn Manson.
