Transformers

Review by Margaret Pomeranz

It was good seeing the first screening of TRANSFORMERS anywhere in the world with a cinema full of fans of the cartoon series. They cheered, they laughed, they applauded at this robust big screen adaptation of the basic good versus evil confrontation.

It all starts when Sam Witwicky, (SHIA LaBEOUF) goes to buy his first car with his dad. He ignores the little yellow VW but goes for the racing striped Camaro instead.

There is a cube hidden in the world that is the secret to the power of the universe.

And the bad dudes headed by the mighty Megatron, voiced by HUGO WEAVING, want it but the good guys, led by Optimus Prime voice, PETER CULLEN, are out to stop them.

It was weird that a complete newcomer to the Transformers phenomenon like myself became involved in the fate of these mega-machines.

There was actually a moment of real pathos when Sam’s transformed Camaro is badly damaged possibly heading for the scrap heap.

There are nice performances from JON VOIGT as the Secretary for Defence and JOHN TURTURRO as an agent with the mysterious Section 7.

And there’s a nice turn by the Australian RACHEL TAYLOR who’s allowed to keep her Aussie accent.

But the real credit must go to director Michael Bay. He brings a muscular, visceral energy to the film that makes you very aware of enjoying a big screen experience.

One criticism expressed by a die-hard fan that I can only agree with is that the action sequences are expressionistic, short on detail, with rapid-fire editing. What is so wrong with giving us the full picture?

MARGARET: David?

DAVID: Well, it's the trend, isn't it?

MARGARET: Yeah.

DAVID: I mean so many action scenes these days are done that way and I think it's something to do with the kids who are used to things moving very, very quickly and so...

MARGARET: On computer games.

DAVID: On computer games, so we...

MARGARET: I think they ought to train the kids to slow down a bit.

DAVID: Well, maybe they have to train us to speed up a bit, that's the thing. No. But it's interesting. Is this the first good review you've given to a Michael Bay film, I wonder?

MARGARET: I don't think so, no. I - I...

DAVID: He hasn't had a very good track record.

MARGARET: No, he hasn't, but he does bring that muscularity to films, don't you think?

DAVID: Yeah. No, look, I think what set this somewhat apart - I mean I'm not a huge fan, but what sets it somewhat apart from others is that the human characters are pretty well defined and they're well acted. It's an interesting cast. There's quite a lot of humour in it and, of course, the special effects, as always with these things, are wonderful.

MARGARET: And the machines develop real personalities.

DAVID: Personalities as well, they do, yes.

MARGARET: I tell you, they've got more personality than some real characters in some films we've seen lately.

DAVID: Well, that's true, yes.

Comment: Bay, managed to stay true to the original in most ways, including the somewhat corny 80's humour. The CG is first rate but the movie's weakness is the transformers to humans ratio - far too much focus on the latter. The entire mom and pop storyline should have been cut - it's cringe-inducing.

Comment: I vaguely remember the Transformers cartoon and I thought the movie was pretty good. I loved the special effects; the transformations were always fun to watch, and I thought the characters were believable and well-acted. I have a thing for movies about other beings from other places in the universe, so this aspect of the movie tickled my fancy.

Definitely an action-packed movie, that fell short of a great movie, but was still enjoyable.

Comment: This fairly long film in which the time zooms past quickley is a very awesomely put together action film including great acting, humour and special effects.

The basic "science-fiction" story line of good verses evil develops a very stunning movie and keeps you intregued and laughing as the lengthy running time whizzes past. One minor problem was too many close up shots in the action scene where I couldn't see what was going on.

But, this is an awesome film and a great success for Michael Bay, his cast and crew.

Comment: I would definitely agree with the action sequences a tad fast and the some-what dis-orienting at times, however that is the trend. this movie i thought was probably one of the very few comic/cartoon-to-movies done well, so many are done just so formulaic, this one was deep, colourful and remained true to the ethos of Transformers. though i would not want to see a sequel to give the title some dignity, which is alot more than i can say for other titles that just churn these sequels and trilogys like hotcakes!

Comment: As a fan of the older TV series and toys, this movie was a perfect blend of childhood nostalgia and more modern pop-culture refererences. The robot design was unique but kept to true to the spirit of the Autobots and Deceptecons. The human performances were as interesting as the robots, which was a nice surprise.

The only fault with this film would be its blatant use as American military propaganda. The military scenes are glamorised and glorified but are ultimately superfluous to the overall storyline, and this may sully the viewing experience for some.

The action is relentless, the humour is great and the characters you actually care about. This is a real good vs evil movie and of course the nostalgia factor plays a part. But most of all the special effects and CGI is stunning - just breath taking. It's great to finally have an exhilirating 2 hours at the movies once again.

Comment: It was quite satisfying to see so many of the original autobots and deceptorcons appear in this adaptation. The judicious use of cgi really made the action scenes and kept the scale in proportion. The enormity of the events was well captured too with even the mighty american government left chasing it's tail; and any film that fails to paint uncle sam as God is gold in my book. The final plots twist was the perfect icing and rounded out the film well. Four and a half stars.

Comment: I was a fan of the cartoon, and found the movie disappointing. I had a problem with the emphasis on the human characters and their unnecessary & boring subplots over the characters that really matter - the Transformers! I should have been less optimistic about this movie when I learned Michael Bay was in charge, because it has his usual trademarks - lazy characterization, bad romantic subplot, and lame humour. I don't expect Oscar-worthy storytelling in a film like this, but it doesn't have to be unbearable either!

The SFX and the scenes with the robots were great though.

Comment: Yes, this is basically an elaborate way to sell action figures, but I had the more fun in Transformers than I have watching a movie for a LONG time. I challenge anyone not to relive their childhood for 2 1/2 hours watching this. The CGI is some of the best I've seen; the action is big and beautiful; humour sets the right tone; actors are believeable; and the script transforms a silly concept into a driving plot. It's so easy to be cynical about this kind of movie but enjoy it because Transformers is the so good.

Comment: As a fan of the cartoon series in my childhood I was at first scoffing at the idea that Transformers could be adapted into a film and still hold onto the concept of what it was always about.

There was in my opinion a great mix of sensitivity and action in this film that could only have been with the influence of Spielberg.

I think the editing though fast is vital for the movie and story. Isn't the role of a movie to illustrate the happenings or situations of the characters times and experiences?

Comment: As a big fan of most Transformers series (G1, Beast Wars, Beast Machines, the comics, even Cybertron), I must say I'm a bit disappointed. As an action movie, it was very good, and the human characters were very well done. But the storyline lacked depth, and I didn't think we saw much in the way of characterisations of the Transformers themselves, particularly the Decepticons. Transformers fans have been spoiled in the past by high-quality stories, and this movie didn't live up to it. But in the end, it was a very good attempt, and it is an excellent action film.

Comment: I'm no fan of the franchise by any means, so I went in expecting a big, fun action movie. Transformers definitely delivers in that area. I think something that will irk people is the greater amount of time dedicated to the humans, rather than the big robots themselves. Shia LaBeouf does make a likable hero, but the film is called Transformers after all. Bring on a sequel.

Why do we need to see a bunch of government cronies trying to work out what a robotic noise is when we've already been shown what it is earlier in the film? There is no character development. It's just choppy and messy. Bay at his best is still Bay. Awful.

Comment: I thought it was pathetic, and was really dissappointed with it. The film centres itself around the human characters and the part they play. There is little character development on the part of the Robots, and really their only role is in the fight scenes. The human characters I found had incredibly annoying personality traites and the whole film reeked of a B grade 1980's action movie.
Transformers the show was all about the Robots, admittedly this was so hasbro could sell more toys, but at least it had an addictive plot.

Comment: Decent enough, but not great. The movie really deteriorates into an episode of Dawson's Creek for much of it. I mean, come on, a huge portion of the target audience is the original fans, and we're all aged from our mid twenties to early thirties by now, so we don't really need that crap. None of the main characters die, a cop out, the humour reeked and the movie was about the kid, not the Transformers. The action had too much closeup and rapidfire switching. I'm not a huge fan of the new designs, either.

Michael Bay has directed some of the cheesiest Hollywood fluff of our time, and this no exception. Why David and Margaret gave this 3 1/2 is a bit bewildering... The transformers universe and cast of characters is so rich, and yet for no good reason they invented new characters and completely changed the nature of existing characters, without positive results.

I would've like to see character development for the robots, not the humans. So many pointless scenes and subplots with the human characters that added nothing to the movie.

The special effects were very well done, though does this really enhance the quality of the film. These days quality CGI is basically a given and perhaps Michael Bay should've spent more time on the storyline and script.

Comment: I found this film absolutely spot on. It was action packed and surprisingly funny. I was initially not happy about the concept of "new look" transformers, but they ended up looking fantastic.

My one criticism is that there was too much of a focus on the humans. In the old cartoons, the tranformers were the main characters and the humans were just extras. For this movie, it seems to have swapped around. And where is the battle scene that shows what Optimus is really made of?

Great film. See it.

Comment: This was an amazing movie. The special effect were terrific and the characters roles were very convincing. they made an excellent story out of something as child-like as robots. However, the end fight scene was too long and repetitive.

Comment: Michael Bay is a horrible, horrible film maker. A sexist and tasteless one-trick-pony. He has the subtlety of a chinsaw and the touch of a tow-truck. "You shoot, I'll drive". "What your about to see is totally classified".
The special effects shoud be good, something has to come from that budget.
The things is, you people have only yourselves to blame for the fact that this film is considered satisfactory. You are only encouraging him by going to see his fanciful films...

Comment: I have to agree mostly with the poor reviews given here. Let me firstly say that the action scenes/special effects were very nice, maybe formulaic to a degree, but still good.

Having said that, I don't understand why companies and individuals don't PUSH themselves HARDER to get the storyline correct! The money is obviously there, so why not spend more time paying attention to detail?

The 2 young actresses were horrible. They looked like they walked into the movie from another set. Really, really bad.

Comment: This is an awesome movie!!! It has great characters, robots and human, hot girls, big guns and large explosions. And to cap it all off is that the sound track was brilliant. Linkin Parks's "What I've Done" was the perfect final song for the movie, I was shaking when i left the cinema after the end it was that good. The graphics were incredible... M16 jet planes, tanks and Mack trucks going full speed and then pulling up as a robot!!! Great Movie!!!!

Comment: Once again Bay has turned what had the potential to be an epic masterpiece into a choppy, pointless, far-too-many-cheapshot-jokes-far-too-often mindless piece of drivel.

Thank you. :-)

Comment: Such a big fan of the cartoon in the 80's, I too was skeptical of the movie, but damm it didn't disappoint. In a way I want a sequel but at the same time I think it would ruin such a great movie, Megatron is dead anyway so who would they be fighting? Loved it, except for some of the cheese.
