"The Blackening", MACHINE HEAD's sixth studio album, is quite simply the band's best effort since its shattering 1994 debut, "Burn My Eyes", and may even surpass that modern classic. It may also be the best all-out metal recording of 2007. This is a no-holds-barred, brutally heavy, uncompromising album, a labor of love on which every single note of music bleeds with the passion and anger of Robb Flynn and his bandmates. And the music they've created here — eight songs, with two of them passing the nine-minute mark and another pair cruising past ten minutes — is relentless, monstrously heavy and perhaps lyrically darker than anything the band has done before. In short, MACHINE HEAD has made its masterpiece.

MACHINE HEAD — and Flynn in particular — have always been under intense scrutiny since arriving on the metal scene in such unforgettable style with "Burn My Eyes" all those years ago. In the ensuing decade and a half, expectations and commercial pressures seemed to drive everyone a little crazy: the band, its label, and its fans, all of whom seem to be searching for some sort of abstract, undefined height of perfection and success. The frantic overthinking on the still-worthy sophomore album "The More Things Change" was followed by the more market-driven pursuits of "The Burning Red" (which was nevertheless a solid CD) and "Supercharger" (widely acknowledged as the band's lowest ebb). Fifth album "Through the Ashes of Empire" found the group righting the ship, discarding counsel about current music trends and finding its way back to the most pure-sounding MACHINE HEAD CD since the first. Freed of commercial considerations, "Empire" was the best-received MH effort in a while and paved the way for the all-out assault of "The Blackening".

Aside from the first record, this is the ultimate MACHINE HEAD album: it clearly sounds like the work of a band completely following its artistic bent without giving a damn for the consequences. Only that kind of mindset would allow any act to open an album with a track that runs for 10 minutes and 34 seconds. But that's just what MACHINE HEAD has done with "Clenching the Fists of Dissent". The song's haunting, gentle opening soon gives way to an overwhelming barrage of riffs, tempo changes and mood swings, each calibrated for maximum heaviness and impact. The track sets the tone for the rest of the album, with a vibe that veers between fury and despair.

The sonic pyrotechnics continue straight into "Beautiful Mourning" and the literally breathtaking "Aesthetics of Hate", which channels its title emotion into a blazing volcano of pure speed and furious guitarwork from Flynn and Phil Demmel. The fact that the song is driven by Flynn's anger over the media response to Dimebag Darrell's death only adds to its raw energy. "Now I Lay Thee Down" is the closest that MACHINE HEAD comes to easing off the accelerator on this record, but even its slight lean in a ballad-like direction is balanced by its onslaught of slow, ominous riffing.

The incredible barrage of metallic power continues on "Slanderous" and especially "Halo", whose main riff is nothing short of classic MACHINE HEAD. All four members of the band — Flynn, Demmel, bassist Adam Duce and drummer Dave McClain — have not only risen to the occasion on this record, but surpassed themselves, with Flynn and Demmel playing off each other in an intense, dynamic way that Flynn has arguably never had before with any previous MACHINE HEAD guitarist. The fluid playing of all four members and seamless songwriting keeps each song lively and interesting, so that even the most lengthy numbers never feel like they're dragging.

"The Blackening" ends almost where it begins, with "A Farewell to Arms", like "Dissent", addressing the spiraling, catastrophic situation that the once-mighty U.S. has found itself in thanks to its depraved, delusional, war-mongering leadership. But whereas "Dissent" is a fevered call to revolution, "Farewell" is more mournful and accusing: "War hawks and senators they sit tight, so trite/Never their sons will know what it's like to fight/But soldiers are dead/And children have bled/And the silence is numb/What have we become?" Some here on the Blabbermouth message boards have already commented on the political nature of the lyrics, but Flynn's clear, unrestrained feelings on these subjects only add to the sense of artistic freedom and emotional power on the disc.

In a recent span of time that has seen credible comeback efforts from SLAYER and TYPE O NEGATIVE, plus worthy new albums from contenders like LAMB OF GOD, TRIVIUM and MASTODON, it's fitting that MACHINE HEAD — who waged an often lonely battle to keep its identity through metal's ups and downs — have topped them all and set the standard for the next big return to form (we're looking at you, METALLICA). But "The Blackening" is no mere comeback: it's the nearly perfect testament to the musical, personal and commercial journey that MACHINE HEAD has taken and survived all these years, their sound and integrity restored and intact. It's also one of the purest, finest, most powerful expressions of modern heavy metal released in this young but already blackened century.

I heard it. It's good for a Modern Metal style, not exactly my cup of tea, but to be fair - I think this effort deserves an 8.
Just didn't "grabbed" my attention, but an overall quality stuff.

Months ago, Robb Flynn promised that this album was going to be Machine Head's "Master Of Puppets". Well, that's a bold claim - but I have to say he isn't far off.

I was one of the few that never really liked "Through The Ashes Of Empires". No matter how many times I put it on, I just don't think it gels. There's undoubtedly some good moments, but far too many mediocre moments too.

After the first couple of listens of "The Blackening", I was worried Machine Head had released another average album. A couple more listens revealed the truth. This is damn fine album. In fact, that's a lie, it's a truly great album. Not quite "Master Of Puppets", but I'm already convinced it's easily the best thrash album this decade.

Then I heard 'Imperium' (top 10 MH song) and my hopes for them rises again, but "Through Ashes Of Empire" was just average album from a band that unsuccessfuly tryin' to capture sound from their first releases.
Same thing is with "The Blackening"...

A very good metal album but not of the quality as i expected it to be after the pre-release hype by rob flynn and some media. I can tell you why this is my summary:

"we had so many great riff ideas that the songs became longer and longer" - yeah, and that´s how the songs came out at last in some cases: patchwork. Take the opener "fists of dissent", sorry guys, this is realy knitting 24 ideas together and call it a song.

robs singing - i agree with some comments above, the singing was fine for one or two records (shouting and whispering), but it gets boring on record 3 and 4 and 5 and beyond. and of course, the melodies in most cases are too cheesy. "This is my last gooooodbahaaaayyyyy" - OMFuG!! :D

As is said, still better than 80% of the stuff released out there, but no "masterpiece" IMHO

This one tops the new Chimaira album (after the title track, the album is solid at best), and it's gonna take something huge to top The Blackening.

But anyways, this album is definitely their best since Burn My Eyes. Both are different animals so time will tell which one I like better. Ashes was a great comeback album and this one is a middle finger to all the haters that doubted them.

I really think Phil Demmell brought back all their integrity.

Maybe I'm getting too old but the best stuff to come out seems to be released by old band (Slayer, Exodus, Machine Head, Testament)

I agree with those who said, this is MH attempt to recreate And Justice 2007. The song's lenght, the prog influences... Just have to get more familiar with the album to see if it can stands the test of time the way And Justice has stood to this day.

It isn't comparable to Burn My Eyes. To me, Burn My Eyes was a blend of South Of Heaven, Beaneath The Remains, Arise and Master Of Puppets. It has the melodies of MOP and SOH but with a touch of Sepultura.

This one is more like TTAOE but with more progressive song structures. It is closest to And Justice For All than Burn My Eyes. The songs are longer, the arrangements more complex. It's Machine Head mixed with element from Old Rush or Operation Mindcrime.

You put it better than anyone. I too was a huge fan of the first two records, particuliarly BME, it and TMTC, were just flat out crushing, hungry sounding, dangerous sounding, all that shit....

The Burning Red and Supercharger were good, good at what they were, better than any of the other records of that "genre". The still maintained MH identity, in a sense, particuliarly Supercharger, which I thing is better than Burning Red, which I thought was half of a good record, at best.

I ve heard Empires alot.... It had moments that were great but nothing that really stood out, and the vox was pretty much hiliarious. Average. I am not saying that they are bad or shitty players or anything like that. They are technically great, they can play alot of notes and are well versed in dexterity and all that, but the SONGWRITING is not there, the hooks and groove and shit are just lacking. The Blackening following that same path as Empires...

MH were great on those earlier records because they kept it simple. Burn MY eyes was just crushing with hooks and everything....

I know that it is totally in fashion and trendy to single out aptitude as the new mark of what makes a band good, but think of the songs, they are long, and flashy, and have alot of notes in them, and are heavy, but they are not that good.

9/10

More consistent than Through The Ashes of Empires...but it's hard to top Imperium and Season's Wither.

The only reason its not a 10/10 is because the chorus in "Slanderous" is so lame - "I hate my father why do I hate myself"...please.

Other than that, a damn fine effort. Color me impressed.

And um, why isn't this band headlining Ozzfest/why are they opening for Trivium?

Yep, they deserve credit for really doing their own thing and not bowing to any pressure to deliver a radio friendly product. There is some great stuff on here, but there just didn't appaer to be anything that would make me say 'i HAVE to hear that again.' Bands need to learn to stop overhyping their upcoming records, cause it sets up unrealistic expectations! So, decent record, some great riffs, but way overhyped!!

I'm going to have to say this is the best Machine Head album ever, it's crushing at the right times, the songs are well written, and the tempo and time changes are classic Machine Head meets new school American Metal. I'm not a huge fan of bands like Lamb of God, Trivium, or Metal core like Killswitch and God Forbid, but MH seems to be taken a cue from them and adding a bit of that sound to their arsenel. It's like they've taken the best elements of late 80's thrash and new school metalcore and melded them into a MH record. Better than Burn my Eyes, and The more things change. To be honest, The Burning Red was a nu-metal album, but it was pretty catchy. Supercharger doesn't exist to me, worst album I've ever purchased.

Highly overrated and nowhere near Burn my Eyes, much less Master of Puppets or And Justice.
There's nothing new here, and besides 2 or 3 good moments it just sounds generic. It sounds heavy and it's well played, but if you don't have songwriting to match, it just doesn't cut it.
It's like MH is trying to imitate their imitators (Lamb of God, etc).
This kind of sound is completely worn out. For some really heavy sound I much rather listen to European bands: Napalm Death, Satyricon, COF, Entombed, Samael, Jesu, etc. The States have been putting out very good (and original) "metal" but in total different approaches: Mastodon, ISIS, Neurosis, Pelican, Red Sparowes.
Let's all hope that Testament comes up with something better than this and up to par with their old works.

Considering how terrible amercian metal has been for the last 10 years (emo/mallcore/numetal offspring) this is a good release. However, saying that this is some metal masterpiece is off base.

I checked it out just to see what the big deal was and apart from a slightly more old-school feel there isn't anything special about it. Robb Flynn did a good job self-promoting it by talking publicly about it every 5 minutes and it looks like his enthusiasm has rubbed off on the sheep. "Master Of Puppets"? Please...

Eternal Nightmare was a stone-cold killer.

the vocals were polarizing but once/if you got used to them, you could appreciaite the viciousness that Killian exuded.

and he had pretty cool lyrics:

"This ain't a church and I ain't no priest
So save it for the funeral to be....

And you can see me on your public TV
Sports jacket, cool tie, and wheeling out the body"

-- "Calling In The Coroner"

gotta love that.

even if you hated Killian's nasaly tone (many did/do) the riffs were killer.

you need a box of industrial-size Q-tips if you don't like the music on Eternal Nightmare.

That being said this album fucking owns, ive had the leaked copy for two months and have not stopped listening to it. Runs such a gauntlet of mood and does not get old. Full of anxiety

Dude this is the Album of the year, with Chimaira's Ressurection comming in at a close 2nd. All you who think that the only reason its has a really high rating because of the blabbermouth and roadrunner ties are really stupid. Go check out the reviews on metal hammer, kerang!, metal edge, Decibel, and metalreview.com and all of those sites gave it a 9 or 10. This is the best album since burn my eyes!

I can't wait to hear this now. I have always had a place in my heart for machine head and am glad that Rob did not lose his way.

On another note, I still find it hard to believe (....ok on this board....I find it hard to understand) why everyone hates "The Burning Red" so much. OK, sure it's Nu-metal or whatever the idiots like to sterotype metal, but it was a perfect leek for kids and others to branch out of the Nu-metal scene. Just starting with that Album for some guy who only listened to Korn before, will find that Album to be likable. This will then turn the kid to check out previous albums by Machine Head. Then he'll devise ideas that tell him not to listen to what MTV tells him. You should atleast give it credit. Rob was probably under so much pressure aswell.

and personally "supercharger" was the worst. Not saying it was bad but just felt very mediocre.

if you don´t like this kind of music why do you evn bother. Angra? Symphony X? Who f..kin cares? And to all you "metalheads" who cares about labels and what the music is called...you haven´t been in the game too long have you! I´m sure yout wearing corpsepaint in bed and that you haven´t moved out of your parents house yet and that you cry if a band isn´t metal enough for you and your twelwe year old boyfriend. Metalcore or whatever, if MH did two numetalrecordings that´s too bad (yeah, at least Superc. was too bad) but for f..k sake forgive them. look what they have become now. kiss their feet, suck their c..ks if necessary. They are gods now, the best in their genre. I wouldn´t call it thrash but it´s f-ing great. This album is a ten...don´t f..k with me! And the best is that it´s getting better! This thing sounds killer...
I am very happy with the direction they chose on this album; it's more on the progressive side than their previous efforts.
Overall, a great addition to their catalog. Although, I found it hard to truly remember some of the songs just after listening to them for the first time, I still liked the song writing... and that may be my only complaint: these songs are so long that they are devoid of some really good hooks. But this isn't pop music, and some of the best albums I've heard have been 'growers'. Just give it repeated listens and it will pay off. A thumbs up for MH this time around.

I have never been a huge fan of Rob's voice. Just not my cup of tea. For me, I still prefer Chimaira's album, if comparing to some of the more well known releases this year.

For the record. BME was not and is not overrated. It still stands up to the test more than 10 years on. The Blackening returns to those days while mixing what the band learned on TTAOE. That to me is what makes this album one of the best this year. We will see in 10 years time if it stands up the way BME did. I for one think it will!

This album clearly does not surpass 'Burn My Eyes'. Not even close. The breakdown wankfest and soppy 'i want to touch 14 year old snatch' sections of 'beautiful mourning' have rendered this so, as early on as track 2.
Face facts Mr. Flynn and co. you can certainly write good tunes, and you have attitute and balls to spare, so cut the shite and write a good record. This 'blackening' has very promising riffs, some ripping solos and nearly the whole of 'clenching the fists of dissent' is killer apart from the 'trivium are our bum chums' touchy-feely section that wouldnt be out of place in a boyband song. Aesthetics of Hate is also a good tune. Take the best from this and 'between the ashes of empires' and you would have a formidable album.
I am definitley not saying this is a bad album, Machine Head are standing strong in amongst a sea of inadequacy and mediocrity. Hoewever maybe a bit more consideration and cut and paste when it comes to the lame parts. All killer, no filler please!

"A Picardy third (also known as Tierce de Picardie) is a harmonic device used in European classical music.

It refers to the use of a major chord at the end of a musical section in a minor key. This is achieved by raising the third of the expected minor triad by a semitone (a half step), to create a major triad. The aural effect of this is unexpected, and can add a "bittersweet" feeling to the music."

ok...

and the relevance to what i wrote above your question would be?

I don't see why you can't care for the album (I gave it a 5). You guys are so funny sometimes. The posts range from "If you don't like this, you're an idiot"; to "If you like this, you're an idiot". LOL. It's mediocre at best. I agreed with some of the more logical posts on here. It's mediocre. It's not anything that stands out in my opinion, and while people certainly have the right to think it's "great" (I REALLY wanted to like it), I just don't see it as a "masterpiece". It's nothing new in the way of offerings already out there imo.

As I said in another post, Masterpieces are cds that can withstand the test of time. While there are good cds that get released, I wouldn't consider most to be "masterpieces". Masterpieces are cds that people can listen to years down the road, and still "get it". Those cds are ones like Metallica's 'Puppets' and 'Justice' albums, Slayer's 'Reign in Blood', Megadeth's 'Rust', and even a Pantera album or two. I would even include Machine Head's 'BME' as a good cd to withstand the tests of time (not a masterpiece, but still relevant 10 years later).

This cd caters to a particular sound and style that is "popular" right now, and though people can certainly enjoy the cd (more power to them), it's hard to argue there isn't similarities to other "popular" metal artists that currently enjoy some form of popularity.

This is all my opinion, and hail to Machine Head and fans who love this cd, and support them. I might not be crazy about what they've done since BME, but I think they've been in the business long enough to earn, and deserve some respect. I wish them well.

This is the best metal cd i've heard in years. it is absolutely awsome! The only problem is that they jumped on the political bandwagon. The reason that this cd will NOT "stand the test of time", is because in just a few short years people are going to listen to it, and not know what the fuck the lyrics are about, or not give a fuck. That's fine that all these bands are against the Iraq war, and the government, but in a couple of years when Bush is gone, no one will give a fuck, and no one will care about how strongly against the war all these bands were.

you didn't offend anyone with posting Rollingstone.com's review.

i was merely pointing out that a rebuttal would be better served on the Rollingstone.com website.

perhaps i came across a bit dickish with that remark. Blabbermouth has a way of bringing out the inner dick in people (it's easy to critcize someone when you don't see them face to face; i bet if everyone hear were in a bar talking and drinking, the arguments would be far less and people would actually like 90% of the crowd).

and i remembered that you were the "first post" guy a while back. and that IS annoying buy i don't suppose i had to bring it up.

Dissent- Good opening track. But really i was expecting something crushing from machine head. I'll be listening for a while, to see if all sinks in. But this track wasnt AMAZING.

Mourning- I dont care who you are. with a line "Fuck You All" to start a song, thats metal my man. Good song, still setteling in. Reminds me a lot of "Burn My Eyes", pretty awesome melodie back and forth in the song, id give it a 9 out of 10 for a song on the record.

Aesthetics- Awesome song, i heard the begining awhile back on a webisode, and thought the new cd was going to be crushing. One of the best songs as of yet. Awesome theme, truely intriging lyrics. Going to be a classic no matter if they make a video or not, Machine Head will be playing this song for years.

Lay Thee Down- I really liked this song. I dont care what much of you say. I like heavy build-up, and really i think flynn's voice is beautiful on this one. Different style on the record, but nothing MH hasnt done before.

Slanderous- Good. The lyrical message, which is something people always miss with this band, is really amazing. AND HE'S NOT COMPLAING ON HIS FATHER, so listen closer next time you bash! But not an outstanding song compared to the last 3.

Halo- I downloaded this song early, and really wished i wouldnt of downloaded this before i bought the cd because its quite simple an amazing song. And if i had heard it when buying the Cd i think it would of made me pretty pumped for it all. Classic song, and one that you dont have to listen to 10 times to get into. i heard it once and remembered song arrangments. I think it may be the best song on the Cd. nice vocal solo flynn!

Wolves- Crushing. Cant say much i guess. im still listening. But if machine head flawed on the concept of this album it was to make a few of these numbers past the 6 min mark. and this is one. If you want impact, make a song heavy, short and to the point. This would be more memorable if it was shorter.

Farewell- Well... good closer. I really havent listened to it enough to get into it. but i can say for the album ill be listening for awhile, so thats a positive.

I LIKE: this album because machine head have turned back to form, and the music is really technique driven. I like they tried something new, and really took a risk.

I DONT LIKE: how long the songs are. The songs are powerful, but its really like watching somebody beating a man down. One punch and a knock out is better then a repeated trama to the head. I think there needs to be more "classic" songs. Something that sticks to you and makes you go, "WHOA SHIT!"

I am huge Machine Head fan of BME and TMTC, and ill admit TTAOE was good. And expecting something of this sort was a let down for me. I think best tracks are "Aesthetics Of Hate" "Now I Lay Thee Down" "Halo", just like the CD package said. haha. otherwise i think the new songs are just riffage. I gave this cd a 9 on first listen. but i really was disapointed, and i was defending them after the bashers went off. But im going to say what everyone else is. Its not my thing... Maybe if you into dream theatre, Metallica, and Old Thrash you'll be a fan. I wont rate it at a 5 of something now because i dont like it. But its not what i was expecting. Machine Head cant complain, i seen them in milwaukee and bought $45 of merch, and this fucking 8 SONGS for $17 dollars. So machine head have gotten $60 bucks from me. So they complain, and thats why i felt compleled to write this shit. But if you want my background music taste to know if you'd wanna buy it, im into HELLYEAH.

I agree with most here. While the record is not BME, its a killer record. The entertwinning leads are incredible, and is it just my age or just me but am I only one who here's some Vio-lence in the riffing? Not a perfect record but a very good album. To me, this is as close as it going to get to a new vio-lence record. maybe Sean Killian could do a guest spot or somthing!

Nice review.

It sickens me to see so many newbie psuedo metal fans on here talking shit. This cd is good but by no means a Master Of Puppets. If it must be compared to a good Metallica CD then AJFA would be a better fit. I love old Metallica (KEA-AJFA) and I hate it when people shit on real metal masterpieces. The rest of Metallica's work laughable.

Anyway, I love 4 songs on this CD. "Clenching The Fists Of Dissent", "Aesthetics Of Hate", "Slanderous" and last but certainly not least, "Wolves". Even if the entire cd sucked, Wolves a lone would redeem it. But it doesn't suck. It does suffer a little bit of nu-metalitis in some of the choruses. The other 6 I consider filler although I won't skip them in my playlist. I usually end up playing Wolves at least twice. :)

I rate this latest effort an 8/10. it is pretty good and I am glad Rob got his balls back.

BME - 11/10
TMTC - 10/10
TBR - wtf Rob? 3/10
SC - again, wtf Rob? 1/10
TTAOE - 7/10
TB - 8/10

I didn't know Sacred Reich's drummer played for Machine Head. And I thought i was a metalhead... I was and still am a huge SR fan. It sucks they faded away.

but it's still not good enough. this is the second time i've bought a machine head album on hype and it will definitely be the last. I've only listened to the album twice all the way through but both times i've been thouroughly bored by the music and embarrassed by the lyrics. New - Thrash for kids I guess. In all fairness, I bought the new Clutch and Type O at the same time as this, this does not compare to either, especially Clutch. Maybe I'd listen more if I got it on it's own. For now, it will collect dust.

I gave it an 8...It's very good, even great in some places, but many of the songs follow pretty similar formulas, and the clean vocal harmonies were definitely overdone in some places. It's definitely not the best metal album in a decade, not liking it doesn't mean you have bad taste, and BME kicks the shit out of The Blackening. I'm thinking Roadrunner had some influence over a lot of the reviews out there, moneywise.

But besides that I really dig The Blackening. It is a totally solid record with great riffs and McClaine beating his drumkid like Tyson vs Andy Dick. I think Flynn is one of the best voices in metal, and has been that since their debut.

After hearing three of their songs from this album, Clenching the fists of dissent, beautiful mourning and aesthetics of hate I was caught in the washroom jerking off to the music..no, really though I thought these guys must have been possessed at the time with pure musical talent and genius! This album struck my happy nerves, gave me goosebumps just head banging along to the crunchy relentless riffs and blazing solos! I've played this album for a few people who turned their backs on Machinehead during 'The burning red' and 'Supercharger' albums and they literally began thrashing out to it with me, instantaneously reclaiming their love for the band or just simply throwing them down into the top list. I can't imagine anyone giving this album less than a 9 even. ok, maybe a 7 for the jaded "metal" fuckers whose blood isn't even made for metal but for the passionate metal lovers, yesss we all know how fucking SCORCHING this album is!! 10 out of 10, one of the best albums of the year, guaranteed!

These guys put their heart and darkened souls into this project - Philthy's added influence definitely elevated the musical temperature and Robb did push his vocals to include viable singing in a thrash platform, and the drums have improved to such precision - how could so much effort still have the raw edge without creating a formulaic result most thrashers avoid in order to keep the raw energy. MH has matured in production and understand what we wanted!!! They created what they wanted, the way they wanted it, and gave us fans what we wanted - a major stiff kick in the metal world's fat ASS!!! Whatever friggin label you want to put on it's success, will never describe it's place in metal history - one of the heaviest of all times. Give the guys a fair break, they made it what they wanted, and it was what we wanted - how many thrashers can deliver everything you want in one album? At least they still call Bay Area their home and don't hop over to the greener pasture of Metal Friendly L.A. (those St. Anger dudes), who are now recording in NY because they can't stand L.A. anymore.... MH puts one of the heaviest out and still calls Bay Area home - leave the money chasing for the sell out guys, love MH because they are successful for being what we want them to be and that is what they've always been!

Ok, so I'm not a huge fan of Rob Flynn's screaming vox. They sound much like Burton C. Bell in that they just sound more like yelling than a true onslaught of vocal power, but save that one criticism, this album is about as sick as they come. First off, the guitarwork is on par with a Dream Theater or Megadeth, without question, which is a serious tip of the hat. The riffs and dynamics of this album is absolutely perfect. What so many metal bands forget is that dynamics make the heavy heavier and can keep your attention for ten minute songs. That's what made every early Metallica song awesome, the slow to the heavy to the downright sick. This album has renewed my faith in Machine Head and what metal bands are capable of in 2007. GET THIS FUCKING RECORD unless you have no taste for heavy music.

musically take equal parts Biohazzard, Pantera, and 80's Bay Area thrash and add nu-metal vocals and you've got the new Machine Head. Ok, but hardly a formula for metal greatness imho. I would expect a glowing review from Don "corporate tool" Kaye...9.5, WTF!!! WAY TOO OVER-HYPED!

The new Exodus, released later this year, should toss this aside with relative ease.

The Blackening is just the perfect metal album.
Not only are Machine Head keeping more to their roots.
But are progressing with the metal roots.
Every song on here is killer. Every lick, riff, solo, meledy, vocal delievery, transition, rhapsody, and note owns.
I'd give this cd a 10.

Finally gave it a listen:

- songs are too long
- songs are just riffs stringed together with no cohesion
- clean singing blows
- they stole the main riff of Technocracy's "How We Die" for the first song (did you run out of ideas or something?)
- other than that, it's entertaining

This album is heavy metal at its finest. And to the people who talk shit... well, that's what you should be reduced down to. Shit. This is a great album, "Aesthetics of Hate" and "Slander" are my top 2, but they're all brutal. I'd give 'em a 13/10, I'll settle for a 10/10
