Russia to set up embassy in Brunei Darussalam

RUSSIA will be setting up an embassy in Brunei, according to a statement from the Information and Press Department of Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a dialogue session with the media, MFA spokesperson Andrei Nesterenko said that Prime Minister Vladimir Putin signed an order on December 1 to establish a Russian embassy in Brunei in a move to facilitate the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two countries.
"Undoubtedly this step will serve to deal with practical issues of the intensification of Russian-Brunei ties across the board," Nesterenko said.
Prior to the signing of the order, the Sultanate was the only country among the 10 Asean member states where there was no Russian diplomatic mission. The ambassador of Russia to Malaysia was concurrently accredited to Bandar Seri Begawan.
"The opening of the Russian embassy in Brunei will help advance our countries' interests both in that state and in Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region as a whole," Nesterenko added.
Diplomatic relations between the two nations were established in 1999, which was followed with the opening of Brunei's embassy in Moscow in 2001. The MFA spokesman remarked that since then, bilateral interaction has been "evolving at a pretty dynamic pace".
In 2005, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam conducted a visit to Russia and talks between the two leaders sparked a positive impulse in Brunei-Russia cooperation.
The MFA spokesman went on to say that the Sultanate's initiative to diversify its economy opened up "good prospects" for economic ties between the nations.
"Brunei, having considerable financial resources, is ready to cooperate with us in the investment sphere and in the attraction of Russian capital and technologies to the oil and gas industry, mineral prospecting and production, the agro-industrial sector, fishing, forestry and to the area of biotechnologies," Nesterenko was quoted as saying in the press statement.
He added that Russia is aiming at building contacts with Brunei in realising specific projects where Brunei and Russia could cooperate.
