KOIN History

KOIN Local 6
One of the pioneer stations of the Pacific Northwest, KOIN Local 6 began its proud record when the station's doors opened in 1925. At that time, KOIN broadcast radio programs from its headquarters -- a single room in the Portland Hotel. Within months, KOIN joined the ranks of the best-known and most-trusted stations in the country. By 1930, KOIN Local 6 was Portland's CBS affiliate.

During the 1930s and 1940s, KOIN was the top radio station in the Portland area, entertaining its audiences with a kaleidoscope of live music from country to classical. Many of KOIN's on-air personalities were well-known movie stars of the day, such as Art Kirkham, Johnny Carpenter and Red Dunning. KOIN-produced programs were carried to the nation by the new CBS network.

On Oct. 15, 1953, KOIN-TV signed on as Portland's first VHF television station and an affiliate of the CBS Television Network. Many of KOIN Radio's on-air personalities made the transition to the new medium, becoming television stars on KOIN-TV.

KOIN-TV always has been an innovator in local television news.
  • KOIN was the first station in Portland to broadcast a one-hour newscast at 5 p.m. The first to bring Portland viewers an early-morning newscast. The first to fly a news helicopter. The first to use state-of-the-art electronic newsgathering (ENG) cameras in the field. The first to present the news in 16 x 9 Digital Widescreen format. The first to deliver news and information direct to viewers' cellular phones. The list of KOIN's television innovations has spanned three decades, ranging from totally live local programs to an independent television production company, from expanded local news programs to satellite weather animation, and from special documentary reports to community-oriented awareness programs.

Today, Jeff Gianola and Kelley Day anchor KOIN Local 6 every weeknight at 5, 5:30, 6 and 11 p.m.

KOIN-TV is located in The KOIN Center, a 30-story building in the heart of Portland's downtown financial and business community. The building has excellent views of Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens, the Willamette River and Portland's Waterfront Park.
