Casting for Miley Cyrus movie under way

If you know how to juggle fire, break dance and hacky sack, you could be a shoo-in for a part in the new Miley Cyrus movie.

You'll also have to look a tender age 18.

That's one of the more unusual roles casting director Jackie Burch is searching for as she helps find actors for smaller speaking roles in "The Last Song," a Disney movie that will begin shooting in Savannah and Tybee Island in mid-June.

Burch, who is based in Wilmington, N.C., is casting 10 speaking roles in the film and has been working with area talent agents and reviewing hundreds of e-mails from people submitting head shots and resumes. Initial notices were put out on professional casting Web sites and through area talent agents.

"We've been inundated," said Burch, who was in Charlotte, N.C., on Monday. "People are driving from Tennessee, Alabama and Jacksonville, Fla.

"So far, I've already found a lot of good people."

Burch is taping each audition and sending video files to casting directors in Los Angeles. She expects to visit Savannah in her search, she said, but most likely it will only be for callbacks on candidates the directors like.

She's ready to see other experienced actors, even if they are not represented by an agent, she said.

On Monday, the Savannah Tourism and Film Services Office released two new e-mail addresses for interested actors and extras.

Burch's e-mail contact is burchcasting@mac.com. Candidates should list their age and ethnicity in the subject line, according to the Savannah film office.

Another casting director is in charge of finding extras, but details on what that might entail in Savannah were not available Monday.

Extras can submit their pictures and contact information to last songextras@gmail.com. A phone number for an extras hot line will be posted soon on the local film office's Web site, savannahfilm.org.

"The Last Song" is written by acclaimed author Nicholas Sparks. Cyrus will play a young woman who spends the summer with her estranged father.

Kinnear tapped to play Miley's dad

Greg Kinnear will be playing father to America's most famous singing teenager.

The Oscar-nominated actor was named Monday for the part in "The Last Song." He'll play Miley Cyrus' estranged father, with whom she spends the summer.

The role of Miley's mother has yet to be cast, but Disney casting executive Gail Goldberg said that role also will go to a recognized actress.

Disney officials also have made one significant casting change. In April, young actor Rafi Gavron had been named to play "Will," Miley's love interest.

That role now will be played by Liam Hemsworth, an Australian actor.

The email address songextras@gmail.com is bad. I sent it to that address via my gmail account, so I'm sure it's not a one end temporarily down sort of thing.
