FAH WHO DORAZE—AND THE CAST OF GRINCH!

(11/19/10) • Fah Who Doraze (which means "Welcome, Christmas" in the native Who-tongue) and welcome to the cast of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! This year's edition features a host of Who-returnees including Jeff Skowron as The Grinch. The cast, crew and staff of the Globe gathered before rehearsal to welcome each other to another festive holiday season at The Old Globe.

WELCOME TO LINCOLN HIGH

(11/17/10) • After a successful run in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, the cast, crew and the entire set of Welcome to Arroyo's traveled across town to Lincoln High School Center for the Arts as part of the Globe’s Southeastern San Diego Residency Project for a series of student matinees and public performances. Prior to the event, Globe teaching artists worked with students in the classroom to explore the art and story of the play and its social history. Welcome to Arroyo’s is part of the Globe’s second year of artistic programs in southeastern San Diego supported by a three-year grant from the James Irvine Foundation’s Artistic Innovation Fund. 5th ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING

(11/10/10) • The fifth annual Old Globe Christmas Tree Lighting will take place on November 21 at 6:00 p.m. and kicks off the holiday season in conjunction with San Diego's favorite holiday musical, Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Designed by Grinch scenic designer John Lee Beatty, the unique tree will be located in the center of the Globe Plaza and will remain for the run of the show. This fun family event will feature a special live performance by members of the Grinch and Plaid Tidings casts and a delightful holiday snowfall on the Globe's Cople Plaza. Tickets to this FREE event can be obtained by visiting the Box Office or by calling (619) 23-GLOBE.

(11/8/10) • The cast and crew of The Winter's Tale celebrated in Hattox Hall after a magical opening night. The Old Globe/University of San Diego Graduate Theatre Program production runs in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre through Nov. 14.

THE GRAFFITI OF ARROYO'S

(10/21/10) • The set for Welcome to Arroyo’s is designed to place the audience in the lounge called Arroyo’s. Surrounding the audience are grafitti-covered panels used to represent the exteriors and as projection screens for the various images that help illustrate the story. The panels were built in the Globe's scene shop and were painted by artists from Writerz Blok, a San Diego-based community of artists focusing on alternative and hip-hop culture. They are conveniently located just down the street from the Old Globe Technical Center. This is their second collaboration with the Globe, the first being the production of the hip-hop musical Kingdom in 2009. The projected images were painted on walls at the Technical Center and photographed as they were created. Projection designer Aaron Rhyne created animations based on the painting process which give life to the images.

JEFF SKOWRON IS A GRINCH!

(10/20/10) • Jeff Skowron will return as the Grinch in the Globe’s 13th annual production of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Jeff made his Globe debut as the Grinch in last season’s production. The annual holiday musical will run in the Old Globe Theatre Nov. 20 – Dec. 26. New this year: Tickets to the 11:00 a.m. performances can be purchased for children of all ages!

Jeff is no stranger to Grinch, having performed in both the 2007 and 2008 Broadway productions. He is co-creator and co-star with Matt Yeager of the popular web series "Greg and Donny," which recently won the top honor at the 2010 New York Television Festival: a development deal with the Independent Film Channel (www.greganddonny.com). His additional Broadway credits include Enron (Trader), The Lion King (Ed, Timon, Zazu), Beauty and the Beast (Lefou), High Society (Stanley) and the workshop of The Boy From Oz (playing Chris Bell opposite Hugh Jackman). Jeff has appeared Off Broadway in Debbie Does Dallas and Zombie Prom. His regional credits include Hysterium in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Luther in the world premiere of Leap, both at Cincinnati Playhouse, and Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the Contemporary American Theatre Company. Jeff's film and television credits include New York City Serenade, The Narrows, How to Seduce Difficult Women, The Good Shepherd, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Premium, Chapter 27, all “Law & Order” series and “Mary and Rhoda.” Skowron plays Ryan on the hit web series “The Burg,” directed by Peter Sollett, and Pippin on “All's Faire.”

THE OLD GLOBE/USD GRADUATE THEATRE PROGRAM
TO PRESENT THE WINTER'S TALE

(10/19/10) • The complete cast and creative team of The Old Globe/University of San Diego Graduate Theatre Program's production of William Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale have been announced. One of Shakespeare’s most intriguing romances, The Winter’s Tale seamlessly blends the comic and the tragic, the epic and the intimate. From the savage tragedy of jealous Leontes in Sicilia, to the festive comedy of Perdita and Florizel in Bohemia, this dynamic play combines elements from each dramatic genre with Shakespeare's most searing poetry and a thrilling exploration of the healing, redemptive power of time. Directed by Ray Chamber, the show will run Nov. 7 – Nov. 14 in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre.

2011 SUMMER SEASON ANNOUNCED!

(9/10/10) • Adrian Noble will return as the Artistic Director of the Shakespeare Festival and direct Shakespeare’s The Tempest and Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus. Presented in repertory in the outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, the Festival will also include Much Ado About Nothing directed by Ron Daniels.

“I am delighted that Adrian Noble will be back, particularly so because this season was one of the most acclaimed and successful in the Globe’s history,” said Executive Director Lou Spisto. “Adrian’s direction and work with the company was exceptional and insightful, and the productions were stellar. In the 2011 season, we will build upon the phenomenal success of our annual Shakespeare Festival, one of the nation’s premier theatrical events.”

The season also features Hershey Felder in Maestro: The Art of Leonard Bernstein in the Old Globe Theatre. Preceding Bernstein is a 10-day limited engagement of Hershey Felder in George Gershwin Alone. The West Coast Premiere of John Morogiello’s romantic comedy, Engaging Shaw, in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre will complete the season.

“I am excited that Hershey Felder, who is beloved by Globe audiences, will return to our stage for his third appearance with his newest effort,” Spisto continued. “I also asked Hershey to reprise Gershwin as a prelude to Bernstein because Lenny is a direct artistic descendent of Gershwin. They were both icons of the Twentieth Century who straddled the worlds of popular and classical music. John Morogiello’s play Engaging Shaw is a perceptive account of the real life romance between playwright George Bernard Shaw and socialite Charlotte Payne-Townshend that is very literate and entertaining.”

Amadeus by Peter Shaffer (June 12 – Sept. 22)
Winner of the Tony Award for Best Play and the Academy Award for Best Film, Amadeus is part biography and part murder mystery – and filled with some of the greatest music ever composed. Adrian Noble directs.

Hershey Felder in George Gershwin Alone (July 1 – July 10)
Hershey Felder in Maestro: The Art of Leonard Bernstein (July 15 – Aug. 28) Celebrated playwright/pianist Hershey Felder returns to the Globe with his newest work, along with an old favorite. Maestro: The Art of Leonard Bernstein celebrates the life of one of America's greatest musicians featuring excerpts from West Side Story, Candide, On the Town, Mass and many more. Prior to Maestro, Felder will perform a special limited engagement of George Gershwin Alone. A smash hit at the Globe in 2006, Felder leads audiences through the fascinating rhythms of Gershwin’s legendary songbook while telling the tale of his tragically short life. Joel Zwick directs.

Engaging Shaw by John Morogiello (July 29 – Sept. 4)
John Morogiello’s romantic comedy reveals the real-life courtship and battle of wits between socialite Charlotte Payne-Townshend and playwright George Bernard Shaw (Pygmalion, Major Barbara). Engaging Shaw receives its West Coast Premiere at the Globe following its sold-out New York run.

THE GLOBE WELCOMES THE ARROYO'S CAST

(9/7/10) • The staff of the Globe gave a warm welcome to the Welcome to Arroyo's cast and creative team as they began rehearsals for the west coast premiere of Pulitzer Prize finalist Kristoffer Diaz's play. Directed by Jaime Castañeda, the hip hop-infused play will run in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre Sept. 25 – Oct. 31. Welcome to Arroyo’s will also be performed at Lincoln High School Center for the Arts Nov. 6 and 7 as part of the Globe’s Southeastern San Diego Residency Project.

The cast features Wade Allain-Marcus (Trip Goldstein), Tala Ashe (Lelly Santiago), Byron Bronson (Officer Derek), Andres Munar (Alejandro Arroyo), GQ (Nelson Cardenal) and Amirah Vann (Amalia Arroyo). The creative team includes Takeshi Kata (Scenic Design), Charlotte Devaux (Costume Design), Matthew Richards (Lighting Design), Paul Peterson (Sound Design), Shammy Dee (Musical Direction), Aaron Rhyne (Projection Design) and Elizabeth Lohr (Stage Manager).

THE GLOBE WINS FIVE NAACP AWARDS INCLUDING BEST PRODUCER

(9/2/10) • The Old Globe’s world premiere productions of Sammy and The First Wives Club – A New Musical were the recipients of five 2010 NAACP Theatre Awards. The awards presentation was held on Monday, Aug. 30 at the Director’s Guild of America in Hollywood.

The Old Globe was named Best Producer for the world premiere production of Sammy. Broadway veteran Obba Babatundé won the Best Lead Actor award for his astonishing portrayal of Sammy Davis Jr. and Ian Fraser, winner of 11 Emmy Awards for his musical talents, picked up the award for Best Music Director. The new musical’s book, music and lyrics were written by Oscar and Grammy Award winner Leslie Bricusse and premiered at the Globe Sept. 19 – Nov. 8, 2009.

Internationally recognized opera and theater director Francesca Zambello was named Best Director of a Musical and Broadway and West End designer Mark McCullough won Best Lighting for The First Wives Club. With music by the legendary songwriting team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland and book by Tony Award winner Rupert Holmes, The First Wives Club premiered at the Globe July 17 – August 23, 2009.”

BROADWAY WORLD INTERVIEWS ROBERT FOXWORTH

OLD GLOBE/USD ALUM JIM PARSONS WINS EMMY AWARD

(8/12/10) • Jim Parsons, a graduate of the Old Globe/University of San Diego Masters of Fine Arts program, was awarded the Emmy Award for best lead actor in a comedy for his performance as Sheldon Cooper in the CBS sitcom "The Big Bang Theory."

"As it turns out, his time studying Shakespeare and the classics at USD and the Old Globe was the perfect preparation for his job playing a formula-spouting, pop-culture-pontificating theoretical physicist on network TV," said Karla Peterson in the San Diego Union-Tribune. "The Emmy statue may end up sitting on top of his piano, but part of it belongs in San Diego."

"'I cannot say, and I mean this quite sincerely, how often my time at grad school at USD enters my mind,' said Parsons. 'The type of work I did in that program to get through some of those Shakespearean texts is very similar to the work strategy I use to get through these scientifically dense speeches I have to get through now. My time at USD and the Old Globe was priceless in very specifically getting me ready for this role.'”

TEENS PRESENT TWELFTH NIGHT & AS YOU LIKE IT

(8/24/10) • The Old Globe’s third annual Summer Shakespeare Intensive for teens concluded on Monday, August 16 with a sold out performance of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and As You Like It. The four week program is a unique opportunity for local High School actors and actresses to refine their skills as performers in a professional setting.

2010 GLOBE GALA

(8/23/10) • The 2010 Globe Gala was the most successful fundraising event in the Globe's 75-year history. Held on Saturday, July 31, the amazing evening began in the Alcazar Garden with cocktails and a silent auction. The guests then enjoyed a live auction followed by a performance of the current hit musical, Robin and the 7 Hoods, in the Old Globe Theatre. After the show, Gala guests enjoyed an elegant dinner and dancing under the stars on the Globe's Copley Plaza.

The Honorary Chairs of the Gala were Darlene Shiley, Audrey Geisel and Marion Ross. The Co-Chairs were Karen Cohn, Valerie Cooper, Deni Jacobs, Sandy Redman and Debbie Turner. Thanks to the generous support of the Gala's attendees, the Globe will maintain the highest standards of artistic quality while reaching out to thousands of children throughout the community with its many education programs. MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER INTENSIVE

(8/17/10) • The Globe's Middle School Summer Intensive wrapped up its first successful summer session. Participating students in grades 6, 7 and 8 discovered new approaches to acting through lessons in voice and speech, movement, stage combat, improvisation and much more. On Friday, Aug. 6, the graduating class performed a showcase for parents and friends in Hattox Hall. The students performed short scenes and reveled in demonstrating their newly aquired stage combat techniques! REHEASALS BEGIN FOR THE NEIL SIMON PLAYS

(8/16/10) • The cast and creative team assembled on Tuesday, Aug. 10 for the first day of rehearsal for Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs and Broadway Bound. Excitement permeated the room as director Scott Schwartz talked about his vision for the productions. Scott directed last season's smash hit production of Lost in Yonkers, so the Simon duet is in expert hands. Just like the Globe's annual Shakespeare Festival, the two plays will be performed in repertory with a rotating schedule. Tony Award winner Karen Ziemba, last seen at the Globe in The First Wives Club and Six Degrees of Separation, will play Kate Jerome in the plays. Her two sons will be played by two sets of actors. Sloan Grenz will play Stanley and Austyn Myers (who appeared in Lost in Yonkers) will play Eugene in Brighton Beach Memoirs, and Joseph Parks will play Stanley and Brandon Uranowitz will play Eugene in Broadway Bound. The plays will run in the Old Globe Theatre Sept. 14 – Nov. 7.

The annual holiday musical, directed by James Vasquez with book and lyrics by Timothy Mason and music by Mel Marvin, will run in the Old Globe Theatre November 20 – December 26. Ticket prices range from $39 to $77 for adults and from $20 to $57 for children. FREE SCREENING OF "THE CAT IN HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT!"

(8/12/10) • The Old Globe, in partnership with KPBS, will host a special screening of “The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!,” a new animated television series that will air daily in San Diego on KPBS-TV at 8:30 a.m. starting Sept. 6 and is designed to support science learning for preschoolers. The free event will take place on Monday, September 6 in the Old Globe Theatre. All children in attendance will receive complimentary goody bags and may have their photos taken with The Cat in the Hat himself. The Grinch from the Globe’s annual holiday production of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! will also make a special appearance.

THE OLD GLOBE UNVEILS PHOTO EXHIBIT

(8/6/10) • A permanent exhibit of photos in celebration of the Globe’s 75th anniversary has been unveiled in the Karen and Donald Cohn Education Center and the Old Globe Theatre lobby. The exhibit uses photographs and graphics to present images of the Globe’s 75 years including the many artists who have worked both on and off the stage.

“As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of The Old Globe we thought it important to create a permanent visual display which highlights the theater and its artists, and gives the theater lover a better understanding of the art and craft of theater and the origins of the art form,” said Executive Producer Lou Spisto.

The exhibit is comprised of four parts: “Bringing Art to Life,” “Lineage of the Globe,” “Artists of the Globe” and “History of the Globe.” Curated and designed by Llance Bower, the exhibit includes more than 150 images, custom wall-mounted illustrations, motion-activated digital picture frames and lenticular printing that allows images to change when viewed from different angles.

The exhibit can be viewed by the public as part of the Globe’s regularly scheduled “Behind the Scenes” tours. The 90-minute tours take place on Saturdays and Sundays at 10:30 a.m. and cost $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. No reservations are necessary. GREGG BARNES AND PATRICIA CONOLLY NAMED ASSOCIATE ARTISTS

(8/4/10) • Tony Award-winning costume designer Gregg Barnes and actress Patricia Conolly have been named Associate Artists of The Old Globe.  They are the 54th and 55th artists to receive the prestigious honor which recognizes their unique contributions to the institution.
 
“I am delighted to name these two incredible talents as Associate Artists of The Old Globe,” said Executive Producer Lou Spisto. “Gregg’s renowned design skills are currently on full display on the Old Globe stage with his absolutely incredible costumes for Robin and the 7 Hoods.  His intricate designs, sophisticated color scheme, and outrageous sense of humor are the trademarks of his success.  Patricia has a long history with our institution, having first appeared as Rosalind in Jack O’Brien’s 1976 production of As You Like It.  Her prestigious career has led her to Broadway, the West End, Canada and Australia, and yet Patricia’s artistic home has remained the Old Globe. I’m thrilled to welcome her back with our wonderful production of The Last Romance.”

(8/2/10) • The cast, staff, crew and invited guests celebrated a "ring-a-ding ding" opening night of the new Broadway-bound musical comedy Robin and the 7 Hoods in the Globe's Hattox Hall last Friday night. The crowd was "walkin' happy"and "comin' on strong" the whole night long!
