Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 test screening reactions

harry vs voldemort Over the past few days Twitter has been abuzz surrounding a secret screening taking place today. Following the appearance of director David Yates, producers David Heyman and David Barron and editor Mark Day, it was clear the 400 people in attendance at the screening in Chicago, Illinois would be getting an early look at Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

As with most test screenings the visual effects were incomplete, green screen was rampant, and the music was temporary, so it wasn’t the complete movie, but the screening lasted around 2 hours and reactions have started to appear online.

I won’t post spoilers here, but you can read spoilers by heading over to The Leaky Cauldron who have written up a detailed report on what goes down.

MuggleNet posted a spoiler-free review, which i’ll post a snippet of below:

The film was exactly two hours in length. The plot line followed the book plot line better than the other films had. While you may think that two hours is short (especially compared to the other films), we actually found it to be a very satisfying length.

Fans will be pleased with the adaptation when it comes to the crucial scenes, but at least one important scene left us feeling underwhelmed.

The large majority of this film is the Battle of Hogwarts. As interviews had revealed in the past, the battle itself is close to a hour and keeps an impressive pace. Intermixed with the fighting is, like in the book, Harry’s hunt for the remaining Horcruxes.

It was interesting to watch Voldemort and Harry’s reaction to each Horcrux being destroyed. In the book we see Voldemort’s rage as he realizes what is going on. This is brought across nicely in the film.

You can read the rest here.

With Part 1 being released on DVD and Blu-ray in just over a weeks time a trailer for Part 2 shouldn’t be far off, then it’s just a matter of waiting until July 15th before we can see the finale for ourselves.

Regardless of it following book, its still frustrating to be 2 hours only.

Deathly Hallows as a whole will last around 4 and a half hours. That’s enough.

“but at least one important scene left us feeling underwhelmed.”

SPOILER: And what they’re talking about here is the removal of Dumbledore’s backstory in the Abeforth scene. It would have been nice to see Dumbledore’s past and to show the audience he’s a human like the rest of them, with dark secrets and flaws, but honestly I don’t mind. Just something else that’s exclusive to the books.
