Ex-PM Sanader back in Croatia

Croatian Times

Former Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader has arrived yesterday evening (Mon) at Zagreb Remetinec jail after spending seven months in detention in Austria.

He is under investigation in six cases of fraud and abuse of power in his homeland.

Croatian daily Vecernji List writes that anti-corruption bureau USKOK could indict the ex-PM in September in a case of bribe-taking. He is suspected of having taken 10 million Euros from Hungarian MOL company in return for handing them over the management of Croatian oil firm Ina.

Sanader is also suspected of accepting 3.5 million kunas (470,000 Euros) of unlawful commission from Hypo Alpe Adria Bank for setting up loans for the construction of Croatian embassies. The third investigation encompasses Rijeka tycoon Robert Jezic and his company Dioki, to whom Sanader is believed to have procured cheaper electricity thus damaging state electrical company HEP by 6.3 million kunas (847,000 Euros).

USKOK believes he also tried to force crude oil transporter JANAF to purchase land from Jezic’s Dioki at a price of 10 million kunas (1.34 million Euros) higher than the market price. He is also thought to have received a 4.2 million kuna (564,000 Euros) worth BMW that served for laundering the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) “black fund” filled with money syphoned off from state firms and institutions.

Finally, he is implicated in embezzling these funds through fictitious services and receipts of PR firm Fimi Media.
