PyeongChang 2018 boosts cultural Olympiad plan with new Alpensia concert hall (SportsFeatures.com)
2010. 7. 23.

The PyeongChang 2018 bid for the winter Games has expanded its cultural Olympiad concept with a new dedicated concert hall at Alpensia.

The Alpensia resort hall will host the seventh annual Great Mountains International Music Festival and School, under the theme of Create and RE-Create from July 23- August 12 featuring a rich musical program.
The Gangwon Province already boasts a strong summer tourism following which incorporates a convention center, golf course, and extensive residential properties.
Alpensia will be the central focal point of the PyeongChang bid with the Olympic Village and much of the Olympic family accommodations nearby. The main stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the main press and broadcast centers are located there.
Bid ceo Yang-Ho Cho said: “We are delighted that PyeongChang is hosting this prestigious music festival. PyeongChang and the Gangwon Province are full of Korean cultural tradition and are home to many festivals such as the ‘Danoje Festival,’ a UNESCO designated Masterpiece of Intangible Heritage.

“This music festival will be an exciting taster of what the area offers to visitors from around the world.”

The festival will showcase over 55 concerts and music programs and feature world class talent including an Asian premiere of Lacrimae Beati by American composer Richard Danielpour with the Chinese composer Tan Dun, Kyung-Wha Chung (violin), Also Parisot (cello), Lise de la Salle (piano) and Okada Nobuo (viola).

PyeongChang is in the running with Annecy, France and Munich, Germany in the bid race to host the 2018 winter Olympics. The decision will be taken next July at the IOC session in Durban.
