Carly Simon's recipe for a happy marriage is... not living with your lover.

The singer, who tied the knot with poet Jim Hart 17 years ago, now insists on a separate home to keep their relationship alive.

She told Reader's Digest magazine: "We're still married and still love each other. Maybe we'll actually find some way of living under the same roof together in a different environment."

Carly also admitted she no longer speaks to her ex-husband, singer-songwriter James Taylor, with whom she has two children.

She added: "I would say our relationship is non-existent. It's not the way I want it."
