About >> Introduction
The Duke Forest comprises 7,060 acres of land in Durham, Orange and Alamance counties and has been managed for research and teaching purposes since 1931. The mission of the Forest is to facilitate research that addresses fundamental and applied questions concerning forested and aquatic ecosystems and to aid in the instruction of students so that they will be informed citizens and effective stewards of our natural resources. In addition to supporting education at local universities, the Forest also participates in community outreach through tours and other events.
The original focus on forestry education and research has since expanded to include a broad range of studies in the ecological and environmental sciences. In terms of size, diversity, accessibility and accumulated long-term data, the Duke Forest is a resource for studies related to forest ecosystems and the environment that is unrivaled at any other university.
Management is guided by a comprehensive plan that promotes the Forest's academic mission while ensuring the protection of natural resources. Active management of the Forest helps promote wildlife diversity and healthy forest stands. The management of the Forest is certified by the SmartWood program of the Rainforest Alliance to Forest Stewardship Council™ guidelines, a strict set of environmental, social, and economic standards. Duke Forest is committed to continuing support of these standards.
