Leno Off to Best Start in Three Years in 18-49 and Total Viewers While Fallon Is at Three-Year High in Demo and Best Season Start Thus Far in Total Viewers

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — Oct. 18, 2013 — NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” have delivered more year-to-year gains during the third week of the new television season, boosting both shows to wins over their broadcast timeslot competition for the week of Oct. 7-11.

Leno is off to his biggest opening three weeks to a new TV season in three years in 18-49 viewers and total viewers. Fallon is at a three-year high in 18-49 and has generated his biggest overall audience three weeks into a new season in the five years he’s been hosting “Late Night.”

Versus the first three weeks of the year-ago season, Leno is up 20% in 18-49 viewers (with 1.144 million vs. 951,000) and up 11% in total viewers (3.686 million vs. 3.316 million).

Fallon generated his second-biggest 18-49 weekly audience in more than nine months (758,000, best since premiere week’s 764,000, and excluding that, best since 776,000 for Dec. 17-21). It was also “Late Night’s” second biggest overall audience in more than eight months (1.827 million, biggest since premiere week’s 1.836 million, and excluding that, since 1.832 million for Jan.28-Feb.1).

“Tonight” has now delivered bigger 18-49 audiences than “Late Show” for the last 47 weeks in a row and topped “Kimmel” for 37 of their 40 head-to-head weeks. In total viewers, Leno has out-delivered “Late Show” for 51 weeks in a row and “Kimmel” for 40 of 40 weeks.

Even with Kanye on Kimmel still lost demo seems to be a huge win for Leno. Also looking bad for Letterman after a very long time Kimmel is matching Letterman on total viewers. This week it seems Letterman may win over Leno(of course with Leno on encores) on total viewers though Leno seems to have performed very well on monday and Tuesday nights.

  2. GARebelman

They’ll probably send out a bragging press release about how they finally beat the Tonight Show in the Fall season and shrink the font with 5 asterisks that it was repeats they beat :)

  3. AllOfHerTw!st

That’d be funny if Leno still won [this week] with encores.

  4. Gary Middleton

Leno ended up right at 0.85, Kimmel 0.79. Pretty remarkable result considering we can now confirm that Kimmel absolutely destroyed Leno on both Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Here’s the big thing from my perspective. That 15% downward adjustment Kimmel used to have every week? Last week it was only 8%. Three weeks ago it was close to zero. I don’t know if this is why JC hasn’t bothered with projections lately, but the game seems to have changed. Kimmel is charting an uptrend, i.e. higher highs and higher lows. Leno has been consistently declining since premiere week with the NBC 10 pm lineup.

    Footnote: 0.58 for Dave.

  5. Gary Middleton

In fact, if Kimmel has a 0.8 Friday overnight, his overnights for the week will match what his overnights for the Kanye week. Kimmel is a contender now.

And Leno’s Wednesday lead-in is likely to get worse before it gets better. SVU rerun next week.

  6. Hector

Fallon recently hired 3 new writers.

Not bad to get a promotion 5 months into a new job.

  7. Yoakim

Gary always finds some way to point to doom and gloom for Leno regarding his ratings.

  8. Jim LaForte

Does anyone here think that Jimmy will take Jay before Jay’s time is up? Just wondering….

  9. Gary Middleton

Jim, I believe he has taken Leno a couple of times before. Premiere week, NBA finals week. He’s got a good shot this week, with Leno in reruns. And since he might round to 0.8 for a second consecutive week, I believe it makes him a threat any week that Leno sags a little. NBC would probably love to see that, so any time they can interrupt with a news bulletin or make things otherwise difficult they probably will.

So we’ll see what Kimmel has planned for sweeps. And if he can’t win a week then, there might be a more promising opportunity after Thanksgiving when Scandal has a couple of new episodes while Blacklist and other NBC hits might be benched.

btw, the other Jimmy did 70% of Leno’s number last week, which might be the highest we’ve ever seen. It was largely a booking triumph, and we might continue to see that as Lorne flexes his muscle and guests choose to ingratiate themselves with the future host instead of a guy who will soon no longer be in a position to put them on TV.

  10. Brad

I’m just waiting for Leno to go and watch Kimmel take on any guest he wants with little to no competition. Kimmel is going to get Grade A acts while Letterman and Fallon feud in New York. Lorne Michaels may be the appropriate man to get Fallon great bookings when faced up against Letterman, but the fact is these two are going to really go at it while Kimmel (broadcast) fights Arsenio Hall (syndication), Chelsea Handler (basic cable), Conan (basic cable) and Craig Ferhuson (12:35am on Basic Cable). Those other shows might get some improvement in bookings but they are just going to take on the leftovers really.

  11. Adam Stabelli

NBC wants to dismantle the Leno Tonight Show. And they will stop at nothing to do it.

  12. Gary Middleton

Brad, last week Fallon’s 12:30 show beat Dave’s 11:30 show.

So unless Fallon bombs at 11:30 or Dave inherits massive numbers of Leno viewers, I don’t think too many top guests will choose Letterman over Fallon.

The ones who go to Dave out of old-time loyalty like Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, etc. are no longer ratings draws and are more likely to be liabilities. Their time has passed. Look how SNL ratings plunged when Bruce Willis hosted vs. the previous week with Miley Cyrus.

  13. Gary Middleton

This week’s overnight averages. Can’t rule out Leno’s reruns edging out Kimmel when all the votes are counted:

    Kimmel: .84
    Leno: .76
    Dave: .56

10 pm averages. ABC and NBC remarkably deadlocked again:

    ABC: 1.78
    NBC: 1.78
    CBS: 1.64

“NBC wants to dismantle the Leno Tonight Show. And they will stop at nothing to do it.”

    And that’s a bad thing?

  15. Gary Middleton

    “And that’s a bad thing?”

I think it would be more fun to let Fallon compete, and perhaps win, on merit. We’ll see what kind of schedule NBC puts out there for January. Sort of encouraging that they’re debuting Chicago PD on January 8.

Dave kicks off sweeps with Harrison Ford, who will have been on Leno a week earlier. Kimmel’s first sweeps guest appears to be Mindy Kaling.

  16. Douglas in TN

I’ve been enjoying the Blacklist, and its DVR numbers are astounding.

But how long will the show remain a powerhouse once that singing show is done.

And without it and football, will NBC collapse again?

  17. Gary Middleton

“But how long will the show remain a powerhouse once that singing show is done.”

Is that scenario coming for sure? Assuming they start the next Voice cycle after the Olympics and pretty much bench the Blacklist until that time, there could be few if any Voice-less nights of the Blacklist.

  18. Douglas in TN

Oh, I thought they benched the show more than they did.

  19. Jim LaForte

Is Harrison Ford still a big draw in the demo?

  20. GARebelman

Been a while since I’ve seen somebody crack a 3.0 share in households.
