Minors permit you to use your free electives with intellectual effectiveness and precision – to take a cohesive set of courses in order to complement studies in your major or to explore an unrelated area that holds an interest for you. You may declare more than one minor – all minors will be listed on your transcript – but minors do not appear on the Convocation program or on your diploma. Minors typically require five to seven courses to complete and are counted toward your electives. Each program outlines its particular requirements for a minor, so check the College Catalog for more information.

While you’re scheduling the courses you’ll be taking for your minor, keep in mind that they must be taken for quality grades and that they cannot be used toward your major nor your general education requirements. More than half of the requirements for a minor must be met by registering for courses bearing University of Chicago course numbers.

Meet with your College adviser and with the director of undergraduate studies in the department to declare your minor before Spring Quarter of your third year.
