Annie Lennox has announced that she is releasing a new album called Nostalgia in October. The legendary singer-songwriter says ‘the record has been a labour of love’ and it is a collection of covers of some of her childhood favourite soul, jazz and blues songs, such as ‘Summertime’, ‘I Put a Spell on You’ and ‘Strange Fruit’.

Nostalgia - which is her sixth solo album - will be released in the US on 21 October and 27 October internationally and is her first in four years since A Christmas Cornucopia in 2010 and first non-album album since Songs of Mass Destruction was released in 2007. It is also her third covers album after A Christmas Cornucopia and 1995′s Medusa. To celebrate and coincide with Nostalgia‘s throwback vintage sound, it will also be available on vinyl.

Lennox, 59, revealed that the record’s concept came about after watching videos and performances from ‘The Great American Songbook’ on YouTube and looking back at singers that defined jazz and blues music in the 1930s and 40s, including Billie Holliday, Nina Simone, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. On 12 August she performed some of the songs at an exclusive gig to a small audience in Los Angeles where she was introduced by renowned Blue Note Records musician Don Was, who co-produced the album. The ‘Little Bird’ singer said she does intend to tour to promote Nostalgia but it will not be as extensive as her previous ones, saying ‘less is more for me. I’m more about quality than quantity, and I think this is quite a niche place to be.’

Since her rise to fame in the 80s as one half of iconic New Wave and soul duo, The Eurythmics, Annie has sold over 80 million records worldwide as a group and solo artist and not only become one of the UK’s most celebrated and loved musicians, but also a gay icon due to her stance on LGBT rights and of course her androgynous image, fashion style and voice.
