Republican John Fleming re-elected for Congress

Posted: Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Republican John Fleming has won a second term in Congress, representing western Louisiana's 4th District.

Fleming, a doctor from Minden, easily defeated Democrat David Melville, a minister from Bossier City. Fleming campaigned as an anti-Obama Republican. He said repeal of the Democrats' health overhaul was among his top priorities, and he called Democratic policies out-of-step with his district and most of America.

Melville pitched himself as a moderate candidate willing to work across party lines. He accused Fleming of being too divisive and of putting the GOP over his constituents.

A third independent candidate, Artis Cash, also was in the race, but he did no fundraising.

The 4th District covers western Louisiana from the Arkansas state line to the Calcasieu Parish line, including Shreveport and Natchitoches.
