100 GREATEST ...
100 GREATEST WAR FILMS (PART ONE)
The One Hundred Greatest War Films is a six and a half-hour celebration of the greatest war films ever made. From cinema classics such as Renoir's 'La Grande Illusion' and Pontecorvo's 'Battle of Algiers', to boys own favorites including 'The Great Escape' and 'Kelly's Heroes', the programme is an unique and authoritative exploration of key moments in the history of conflict on film, a genre that portrays man at the extremes of his experience. Through interviews with film-makers, actors, historians, and veterans, The One Hundred Greatest War Films gives an insiders perspective on both the making of the films and the true events behind the stories. The rundown, as voted for by Channel Four viewers, includes interviews with film-makers and stars such as STEVEN SPIELBERG, (Empire of the Sun, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List), RICHARD ATTENBOROUGH, (A Bridge Too Far, Oh! What a Lovely War, The Great Escape), RIDLEY SCOTT, (Black Hawk Down, Gladiator), DAVID RUSSELL (Three Kings), KEN LOACH (Land and Freedom), MARTIN SHEEN (Apocalypse Now), RALPH FIENNES The English Patient, Schindler's List), DONAL SINDEN (The Cruel Sea), and VIRGINIA MCKENNA (Carve Her Name With Pride, A Town Like Alice). There are also interviews with those whose life story is portrayed in the films including RICHARD BOYLE (Salvador), MICHAEL NICHOLSON (Welcome to Sarajevo), ADRIAN CRONAUER (Good Morning Vietnam) & SOLOMON PEREL (Europa Europa), whilst ANDRZEJ SZPILMAN, son of WLADYSLAW SZPILMAN, talks about his father's story of survival in the Warsaw ghetto which formed the basis of ROMAN POLANSKI's 'The Pianist'. Winner of Best Factual Programme (over £50k per hour) at North East & The Border Centre, RTS Awards 2005.
