Retailing giant Amazon says it added 3 million members to its Prime subscription service during the third week of December.

The new wave of subscribers brings the number of total Prime members to "tens of millions" worldwide, Amazon revealed Monday. The company also says a record number of items shipped via Prime.

"This was another great holiday season to be a Prime member," said Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos in a statement.

Amazon's Prime service offers free two-day shipping on most items, as well as access to Netflix rival Amazon Video and the streaming Amazon Music service. Although Prime has been available for 10 years, Amazon's revelation of "tens of millions" of subscribers is the first time the company has offered an official estimate of its customer base. Amazon does not release membership figures.
