Because of San Diego's proximity to Mexico, the region is becoming increasingly bicultural. The City is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse places in the nation. More than 100 languages are spoken by San Diego residents who have come from all parts of the world to live here. The median age of San Diego's population is 35.6, with over 1/4 under the age of 20 and only 11 percent over 65.

  • With more than 1.37 million people, San Diego is the eighth largest city in the United States and the second largest in California.
  • The population of San Diego has grown steadily over the years. The City's Transit-Oriented Development plans for a compact land-use pattern with housing, public parks, plazas, jobs and services located along key points on the transit system.   • By 2020, the City's population is forecast to be 1.54 million, with 3.54 million people in the entire county. By 2030, the City's population is forecast to be 1.69 million, with 3.54 million people in the county. By 2040, the City's population is forecast to be 1.82 million, with 4.16 million people in the county. By 2050, the City's population is forecast to be 1.95 million, with 4.38 million people in the county.
