SNP hustings to hear nomination hopefuls

The Central Borders branch of the Scottish National Party held a hustings on Sunday in the Volunteer Hall, Galashiels, where members listened to speeches from three candidates seeking nomination to contest the Borders seat in the May election.

The meeting was chaired by Borders MSP Paul Wheelhouse, Minister for Community Service and Legal Affairs in the Scottish Government.

The three candidates, who each gave a short introductory speech, were Calum Kerr, Ash Regan Denham and Alex Wilson.

Mr Kerr lives in Cardrona near Peebles and was chairperson and coordinator of the Borders Yes campaign druing the referendum. Ms Denham was also active for the Yes campaign and championed the Women for Independence group. Alex Wilson was Berwickshire coordinator for the Yes campaign and is a community councillor in Duns.

After the introductory speeches, the meeting was open for a question-and-answer session, which stimulated lively debate. Selection of the candidate will be by post under the auspices of the Electoral Commission.
