Until recently, the scariest thing about Andrés Muschietti’s two-part remake of Stephen King’s It was how difficult the damn thing was to get off the ground. But now that New Line Cinema has confirmed an R rating, locked down a release date (September 8, 2017), and found its Pennywise (Hemlock Grove star Bill Skarsgard), we finally get a glimpse of the terrifying clown himself.
Earlier this week, Muschietti posted some photos on his Instagram to celebrate the production getting underway. This caused MovieWeb to do some light digging into Muschietti’s Instagram account, and they unearthed a crude but terrifying sketch from a few weeks ago that might be the precursor to Pennywise’s final look. It’s not much to go on, but holy crap is it the stuff of nightmares.
OK, now just keep the digital effects to a minimum and we should be in good shape.
As we reported previously, Muschietti’s adaptation will split King’s original 1986 novel into two movies. The first will follow the children being stalked by the demonic clown, while the second will pick up decades later, when those same kids are confronting their same demons as adults. Starring opposite Skarsgard as members of the Losers Club will be Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, and Jeremy Ray Taylor.
