Amazon is adding the District to a list that includes Maryland, Virginia, and 26 other states that pay sales taxes on the company's online purchases. This means that customers will have an additional 5.75 percent tacked on to D.C. orders.

An Amazon spokesperson told WTOP that the update is a requirement by the District.

While Amazon wouldn't provide WTOP or The Washington Post with further details, both outlets believe it's because the company is bringing a physical store to the city, which would mandate it to collect taxes for online sales as well. The company has hired the brokerage firm KLNB to scout locations in D.C., according to The Post.

The online retail giant opened its first brick-and-mortar bookstore in Seattle last year, and is rapidly opening other stores across the country. So-called "clicks-to-bricks" stores, which begin online before opening physical locations, are on the rise in D.C. and throughout the country.

Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon, bought The Washington Post for $250 million in 2013. The company currently has distribution facilities in Maryland and Virginia.

Amazon's D.C. sales tax implementation is effective October 1, according to WTOP.
