I've just started listening to your station and I love it. About an hour ago, you played a track sung by Vance Somebody. An Al Jarreau song. Beautiful. Never heard the artist before - what's his full name, please?
Pat
I believe that would be Lance Gilbert. If you check on the extras page you will see that he has an interview posted on Folk Alley, including some songs he sings during the interview. If you enjoyed his music, you could learn more about him in the interview and get some more music whenever you have a few minutes to listen to it.
I saw Odetta in person, many years ago. She opened for a young Neil Diamond - before he was MOTR, when his music was still good.
She was AMAZING. There she was, this GREAT BIG presence - I think if I had been Neil Diamond I would have been afraid to go on after her. Even then she was an icon, a pioneer. She sang, among other things, an Elton John song - "Take Me to the Pilot".
She was amazing.
I heard the interview on Morning Edition. She's pretty amazing.
I just realized I wrote his name Lance, instead of Vance. I meant Vance Gilbert.
I heard most of Odetta's visit to NPR (I listen to KUOW in Seattle, WA). I grew up with the music of Harry Belafonte (my mom is a big fan) and remember the recordings when he introduced Odetta. She has such an amazing voice! It was pretty amazing to hear her on NPR and brought back memories.
