The Broadcast Film Critics Association have announced the nominees for the 17th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. Leading the pack were Michel Hazanavicius’s “The Artist” and Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo,” each of which took a whopping 11 nominations.
Both films were nominated in the picture and director categories, as well as bevy of as expected technical and artistic categories. This sets up the likelihood of a similar outcome at the Oscars. Last year, the Critics’ Choice nominations correctly predicted all but one best picture nominee (“The Kids Are All Right”), and all but two acting nominees (Javier Bardem and John Hawkes). Though aiding in that prediction success rate is the fact that the Critics’ Choice have six acting nominees.
The nominations bode very well for a number of films, actors and actresses that had been seen as dark horses for much of the early days of this year’s awards prognosticating. Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Drive” did exceptionally well, taking nods for picture, director, actor (Ryan Gosling) and supporting actor (Albert Brooks, though that was expected), while Tilda Swinton, Elizabeth Olsen, Patton Oswalt, Andy Serkis, Melissa McCarthy and Carey Mulligan also all are looking like much better possibilities for Oscar nods than once thought (check out which ones Indiewire thinks will make the cut here).
On the other hand, the awards were not a good sign for the likes of Gary Oldman, Glenn Close, Max von Sydow and Vanessa Redgrave, all of whom many saw as near-locks for Oscar nominations at one point or another. All of a sudden, they are all much darker horses. The same can now be said for Oldman’s film “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” altogether, which did not manage a single nomination despite being a considerable entity in terms of its artistic and technical work.
Late arrivals “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” and “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” both found multiple nominations, including picture and director nods for the latter. Though “Girl” was snubbed outside the technical categories and “Loud” lost out on nods in any of the acting categories, including aforementioned von Sydow.
The nominations in general help significantly make clear the overall race, though tomorrow’s SAG nominations and Thursday’s Golden Globe nods will make it all the more so.
