The actor Johnny Depp has married his fiancée, Amber Heard, in a small private ceremony in Los Angeles, it has been reported. The couple have been planning to marry since December 2013, with Depp confirming the engagement last March after he was seen wearing a new ring.

The wedding precedes a larger event to be held this weekend on Depp’s private island, Little Hall’s Pond Cay in the Bahamas, which has islands named after his two children, Lily-Rose, 15, and Jack, 12. It is the second marriage for Depp, 51, who was married to make-up artist Lori Anne Allison from 1983 to 1985, before his 14-year relationship with the French singer Vanessa Paradis, which ended in 2012.

He met Heard, 28, on the set of The Rum Diary in 2011. Last year he described his wife on NBC’s Today show as “a Southern belle and sweet as can be, and very good for me”. It is a first marriage for Heard, who made headlines when she came out as bisexual in 2010.

Depp’s movie Mortdecai is currently in cinemas – although the film was little-loved by critics, it has maintained some box office traction.
